Even though this came out a couple weeks ago and today isn’t #InCaseYouMissedItMonday, this was too good to let go. Sacramento duo Blackalicious hasn’t released a single new note in ten years. Thankfully, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel are back with “The Blowup” from their new album Imani, Vol. 1. Despite a decade-long break, Gift of Gab shows no rust and goes through a lyrical gymnastics session without missing a step. Chief Xcel laces him with a sanguine beat that sees upbeat keys give way to an even more fun chorus that has hints of Jackson 5-like instrumentation. The video is even more sensational as Blackalicious enlists AnimalRobot to create a mashup of the song over carefully selected scenes from the 2009 Wes Anderson flick Fantastic Mr. Fox. The editing is seamless and brings the project full circle as an all around good time. Watch “The Blowup” after the break and be sure to go check out Blackalicious’ 4th studio album Imani, Vol. 1 on iTunes.
