Review: The Silent Partner - @mobbdeephavoc & @Alchemist; A Niles P. Joint

When a new project is announced but not yet released, as a writer you let your imagination wander a bit.  Is your favorite emcee or group going to break new ground?  Will it be innovative or pandering to the new kids?  Will they maintain quality or sacrifice style for substance?  When I heard Havoc and The Alchemist were putting out a joint album called The Silent Partner, I immediately knew what time it was.  I wasn’t going to be sold a false bill of goods, I’m getting violent ass lyrics over brooding beats.  That’s each man’s calling card, especially when Al works with either or both members of Mobb Deep.  But in this case, even if you have the game plan figured out ahead of time, there can be a real beauty in sticking to the script.

This album is well structured, first of all.  The duo keeps it light and only has three guest appearances, all from legends.  Naturally, Prodigy showed up for some gun talk on The Gun Holds a Drum.  Going over 20 years strong and the Mobb still has it on lock.  Elsewhere, Buck 50’s & Bullet Wounds renews a musical alliance with the Wu, in this case it’s Method Man.  Over a dirty piano and ghastly choir, the dudes from the legendary crews put fear in the hearts of wack/soft rappers.  For the conclusion Hear Me Now, Havoc doesn’t even have to leave Queensbridge for a guest verse.  Cormega is the best in the business when it comes to introspective raps and that’s the nature of this song.  They tag team the hell out of it and close the album out on a thoughtful note.

While he has his own legendary chops as a producer, Havoc turns it over to Alchemist for the entirety of the project.  I’d assume it would be somewhat tough as a producer to surrender the boards entirely to someone else.  But The Alchemist and Mobb Deep are close and you can tell that there’s a mutual trust there.  And Al doesn’t disappoint.  While he’s known for his darker & grittier instrumentals, he manages to have some lighter ones mixed in.  Maintain (Fuck How You Feel) was the first single; it’s built around a soulful sample that is actually kind of upbeat.  Out The Frame has chimes reminiscent of your grandmother’s music box and a lurking piano.  Of course Havoc lays down some hardcore bars over both of these songs, bringing forth an interesting disparity.  Later on, the pair makes some Smooth Ride Music which has a terrific mix of cuts and scratches, a scant bongo, some keyboard work, and a lone saxophone.  The backbone is the bullying bassline which takes place of traditional percussion.  This song should preferably be listened to after 9pm only.

As a rapper, Havoc has often been overshadowed by his brother in arms Prodigy.  P has had a gaggle of solo releases over the years while Hav’s greatness is usually mentioned when it comes to his production.  So it’s good to see the silent partner put out a solid album with a talented friend/producer who can match his grit musically.  Neither steps too far outside of their comfort zone, instead sticking to what’s worked for decades.  The Carhartt & constructs crew (think hardcore East Coast heads) will undoubtedly love this one.  It goes for a traditional sound without being at all stale and keeps things trim at 11 tracks.  While some may like more experimentation in their raps, you get what you pay for here.  There’s a real comfort in simplicity and tradition, and Havoc and The Alchemist bring out the best in each other on this album.  It’s dark but fun in a mischievous way, a soundtrack for when you're up to no good.  As an ending note, The Alchemist has now fully produced solo albums for both Havoc and Prodigy.  We can only hope now for an Alchemist-produced Mobb Deep album.  If and when it happens, you know what to expect, and you’ll love it.

#TBT: Contagious by @TheRealRonIsley feat. @rkelly {Written by @Natural_Nation}

In honor of my brother's birthday, this Throwback Thursday is dedicated to one very special song. Fifteen years ago, back in April of 2001, Ronald Isley came out with the single Contagious; the song that could easily be called the father to Trapped in the Closet.  Chante Moore and R.Kelly joined Mr. Isley on what would be the story of  a lifetime, to this very day for, me and my brother .

If you were born in or before the 90's and you were Black this song was unavoidable. For anyone reading this who has no idea what I'm talking about, get your life, and question your childhood. This song is one of the few excuses a grown man has to break out into a short segment of musical theater at any given moment. Life quickly becomes a short episode of The Young and The Restless and to sing this song correctly everyone gets a part. The beauty of this song comes from the sheer magic of Mr. Isley's narration. It was the first time my brother and I had listened to a song that was actually suspenseful. We had no idea what was going to happen next, we just knew it couldn't be good.

The Breakdown

So, check this. The song is from a mans perspective; a mob boss called Mr. Biggs (Ron Isley) and Mr. Biggs has a lady at home. Let's call this woman Crystal. One day, Mr. Biggs leaves his home for the day to take care of some business. He does not end up returning until late that night. He calls Crystal to let her know that he is on his way home but can't seem to reach her. After he calls her mother and can not seem to reach her there either he goes home to relax. But, in the middle of watching TV he thinks he hears a noise upstairs. Approaching the stairs silently he can hear Crystal's voice coming from the bedroom and she's screaming.

" You're contagious touch me baby give me what you got."
                                                                                                                            -Ron Isley

Now, as you can imagine Mr. Biggs is TIGHT and if you haven't guessed by now, Crystal is with another man. Mr. Biggs runs downstairs, grabs his ninja cane of mass destruction (part cane/part sword) and busts in the room to approach them both. At this point Crystal starts to play herself. She tries to convince Biggs that when he walked and saw her slapping skins with Mr. Kelly he was mistaken and they were actually just doing laundry. But what Mr. Biggs doesn't know is that this is the same man who slept with his wife back in the day! Long story short Mr. Biggs threatens to merk them both if the don't get up out of his house. Many people may not know but the feud between Mr. Biggs and Mr. Kelly started with a music video called Down Low and continued way after Contagious. For my brother and I Contagious will always be the first and the last and NOBODY can play Mr. Biggs like my brother can. Enjoy.

Listen: Bad Boy on Death Row - @DaveEast feat. @TheGame; A Niles P. Joint

Harlem and Compton collide on wax, but it’s in the best way imaginable.  The new Dave East song Bad Boy on Death Row shares the name of the two labels that were at odds in the 90’s.  However, a mutual love of the culture unites him with The Game on this SoundCloud loosie.  There’s no gimmick, hell they didn’t even waste time with a hook.  Over a cool, calm, & collected beat by Buda & Grandz, the two exchange more bars than Halloween for almost four minutes straight.  No matter which coast you live, this is perfect for playing in your AC-infused car during the summer.  Just have a friend riding shotgun to hit rewind constantly, because these guys have way too many quotables to list here.  Gotta commend the Mass Appeal Records emcee East for challenging himself by hosting the lyrically underrated Game on a track.  In the end, they both held it down for their respective time zones.  Take a listen after the break.

Listen: twoAM - @sza {Written by @Natural_Nation}

Last week, to my wonderful surprise, SZA released a track called twoAM. The song seems to be in no way related to her third up and coming project A. Posting the link for the song on her twitter this past Thursday she simply added "Lol Just for shits and gigs." The track is a remake of PARTYNEXTDOOR's March track Come and See Me featuring Drake. SZA seems to be speaking from the side of the female, similar to the way Jojo did in her rendition of Marvin's Room (Drake) back in who ever the hell remembers 2000 and something. I'm just really ready for this, anybody else?

Review: 99.9% - @Kaytranada {Written by @Natural_Nation}

On May 6th Kaytranada, Haitian-Canadian electronic music producer and DJ, released his debut studio album 99.9% from XL Recordings. The album features a 15 track set list with countless features like Syd tha KydAnderson .PaakLittle Dragon, and River Tiber just to name a few. Kaytranada's general sound typically features a mix of hip-hop, r&b, funk, house, disco and a number of other genres mixed together in an electronic dance style. The producer has made a name for himself making unique remixes to popular songs as well as producing original pieces for various artists. He has built quite a track record over the past few years. 99.9% was the first album I had ever listened to made by a producer/DJ so it took me a few listens to fully digest. You could almost argue that there would be no one better than a DJ to create an album with a cohesive sound. Their entire responsibility revolves around their ability to create and change energy in a seamless way. That being said Kaytranada accomplishes those seamless transitions with this album.

The album opens up with Track Uno. One of the few songs on the album without a feature. The song features a fresh classic house sound with a repetitive 3/4 beat, cymbals, synthesizers, and drums tied into a electronic song. The beat and the bass becoming amplified as the song continues.

Bus Ride featuring Karriem Riggins and River Tiber come in on track two. The percussion combination, heavy in cymbals, is placed over a light accompaniment of piano and violin. The main focus seems to be geared towards the drums, with what seems to be like a drum solo part of the way through.

After viewing the tracklist I was eager to make my way to I got it good. Why? The feature on this song is Craig David. Craig David! One more time, for those not truly grasping this moment. Craig David! Do you guys remember him or Fill me in and 7 days!? Anyway, this feature tickled me to say the least. I'm sure Craig has had music since his first studio album but I'm just going to be that girl. In this song, Craig David sings about treating his woman to what she desires. In his words "hes got it good". Money does not seem to be an issue when it comes to the right one. This has more of an R&B vibe which is to be expected with the featured singer.

Together featuring Aluna George and GoldLink makes it to my list of favorite tracks and not just because of the feature by GoldLink. Although, GoldLink seems to flow seamlessly over this track. This is one of my favorite songs on the album because I like the light-hearted vibe and the way all three of these artists come together.

Weigh off featuring BADBADNOTGOOD is another one of my favorites. Mainly, because I really really love the addition of the bass guitar. The song infuses the hypnotizing bass riff with synthesized sounds. I can not help but to some how be reminded of the Gorillaz.

Despite the weather is a song that displays a vibe and sound that match the title perfectly. At first listening to the track I was momentarily confused by the title but then I quickly understood. The sunny feel of the song brings across the message that despite the weather it's still going to be a great day.

Glowed Up featuring Anderson .Paak is one of the two songs on the album with a music video. After hearing one project from him I don't doubt that he will be one of those special artists that I like everything from. So, it did not surprise me that I took an affinity to this song from the very first listen. Paaks's voice alone can keep just about anyone intrigued.

Youre the one , track 11, features Syd tha Kyd from the musical group The Internet. It is very clear this is a combination that does no wrong. The song is much more upbeat than their collaboration that came out last year, titled Girl. The song was featured on The Internet's album Ego death. Despite the upbeat tempo you can still expect to hear Syd's sultry voice and candid lyrics.

You're the one flows seamlessly into Vivid Dreams featuring River Tiber. The transition is actually so flawless that you do not quite realize that the other song has ended. This is easily one of top picks. The simple incorporation of the maracas had me sold at first sound. They instantly reminded me of DJ/Producer Sango. Sango is a producer from Seattle who is heavily influenced by Brazilian music. I could not help but to pick up on the underlying hints of Samba inspired rhythms in this song. So it makes perfect sense that Lite Spots and Leave Me Alone featuring Shay Lia were equally some of my favorites songs off the album. The theme carries continuously through all three tracks. I can only assume the woman featured on Lite Spots is speaking Portuguese but I'm not entirely sure. However that particularly track is far funkier than both Vivid Dreams and Leave me alone and, for that reason, is my favorite of the three.

The album ends quite strongly winding its way down with River Tiber and Shay Lia and finally coming to a close with a feature by Little Dragon on a track titled Bullets. Kaytranda has made me a believer when it comes to taking my time out to listen to albums made by producers and DJs. Honestly, that is something that I did not really consider doing before this album. Anyone who is already a Kaytranada fan will thoroughly enjoy this album. Anyone who is not already a fan prepare to add him to your playlists. Listen and enjoy.  Rating. 4/5

WTM Webisodes: @Soulfullnjn Interview

A few months back I got to talk to SOULFULL the day after his awesome performance at TGMInvadesNYC. We talked about his inspiration, the love from his family, friends, hometown, and what HOMEMADE means to him one year later. We also talked about the speculation around him and Karma, his projects for the year, and Boulevard Blues with Ty Jackson. Soulfull is becoming a household name in Jersey and he has the New Jeru Natives to thank for that. Check out my exclusive interview after the break below.

Feature: @ELHAE (written by @RamseySaidWHAT)

Andre 3000, Lauryn Hill, even Drake. Rapping and singing together on a track is nothing new to our ears. This eerie unnamed subgenre of R&B and hip-hop that I like to call rap-singing is the new trend as of late. This is the kind of music I've fixated to since I first started writing reviews. Acts like The Weeknd, Tory Lanez, PartyNextDoor, and Bryson Tiller have caught my ear. The new act to join this list is an experimental (as he likes to call it) artist by the name of Elhae.

I realized he was featured on Só Você with Esta on Sango's producer tape Da Rochina 3 last fall. I first heard Elhae's Needs. It was referred by a friend of a friend who knew someone involved with the production credits. Sounds like a lie but I don't want to get into it just know my source is legit. Anyways, the song is produced in such an awesome way as Elhae croons for the things he needs from his lover. I think it's pretty simple and not too much to ask from your lover.

So after playing this song (& a really dope remix by 8chan) on repeat about 30 times, I really dove into him and the project it was on, All Have Fallen which dropped two months ago. Dude has pipes, bars, and the story to take him over the top. His flow is in beat but kind of has a spoken word vibe to it. Beats from Rascal and the rest of his production is pretty dope from what I've heard thus far.Homeboy is also a pretty dope videographer too directing his own video for a song Situations. It samples Childish Gambino's rendition of the classic U Don't Have to Call by Usher.

"But when you love someone you throw yourself inside the fire. Just to see if it burns, just to see if she cares. Just to see if she realizes that your love is rare"

It truly is special where I get my music nowadays. Usually through soundcloud surfing or a cosign of a respected ear. Someone told me about him and I stumbled upon the music I was already hip to. He's gotten verses and cosigns from acts like Kehlani, JMSN, SPZRKT and more. At this point I knew this dude is for real. I'm excited to see what's next for this Atlanta product. Check him out yourself.

Listen: Come and See Badu - @fatbellybella, @Partyomo & @Drake

I've never been on that wave of watching and listening to song covers, but Erykah Badu surprises us all with this twist on Come and See Me by PARTYNEXTDOOR featuring Drake.

This ballad was already dope but I love what she did with her verse. The problem is people sing the song exactly how it was in the original but she made the song fit her more than it already did. I guess that's why She ILL is and will forever be an R&B legend. I love her background vocals she put under PARTY's verses and hooks. Listen to the cover after the break.

Listen: THat Part - @ScHoolBoyQ feat @kanyewest

After Oxymoron, the world hasn't heard much but a few guest pieces from ScHoolboy Q.

TDE confirmed that his project is already finished and they are just waiting on the go. If that wasn't good enough he dropped his first song since then last week titled THat Part. The song features Kanye West. Not my cup of tea first listen but it's definitely that signature bounce from Q and Ye. Maybe it'll grow on me, Listen for yourself after the break.

Listen: 2AM Thirst Ballad - @SorryKhary (prod. by Swell)

I think we've all been in this situation before. It's 2 in the morning and we still up after the bar so we hit up the reserves.

So since we both up lemme just shoot my shot go to the corner store and grab a pack of gum, red bull, and a three pack of straps. Khary's been busy and his newest offering is titled 2AM Thirst Ballad. The beat starts and I'm really thinking this is the result of him listening to a little bit of Take Care. After Khary talks his way into ole girl drawers the song makes a beat change using some drum kits straight out of a Sango track. Swell really did his thing on the production and Khary leads the way storytelling in a way I know all the fellas could understand. Listen to 2AM Thirst Ballad after the break.

Listen: 24/7 - Kehlani (written by Katriece Davis)

Kehlani is back with a new look and a new song called 24/7.

After a long hiatus from social media following her very public breakup and alleged suicide attempt, the Bay Area singer has returned with a blonde pixie cut and a message. It's been over a year since the release of her Grammy nominated mixtape You Should Be Here and over 5 months since she dropped her last single Did I from December. Not sure what to expect after her personal life exploded all over the internet. It's safe to say her fans (myself included) have been eagerly awaiting new music. She starts the song off with some emotional lyrics: "It's okay to not be okay, to dive in your pain" 24/7 dropped last week and features production by DZL and appears to address her issues with depression. This isn't the first time the R&B songstress has expressed herself through candid and reflective lyrics, and it surely won't be the last. Take a listen.

Review: Piatto D'Oro - @MeyhemLauren; A Niles P. Joint

Meyhem Lauren is the reason why I invented #ICYMIMonday.  The story goes that I saw him perform in 2015 without being too familiar with his solo work, was enamored with what he had to offer musically, but also found out his most recent work at the time was released a year ago.  Instead of a premature Throwback Thursday, I created a new segment because his album was that dope.  I told myself I’d cover his next release in real time.  Well Piatto D’Oro just came out via Fool’s Gold Records so I’m sticking to my guns and taking this one to the rack.  This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year.  Since it came with producer credits, it’s only right I go track by track.

Sauce (feat. Hologram; prod. Seth Silenser) - This may be the first time I’ve heard violins and helicopters but it works on the intro on this song.  Meyhem leads off with a hit and hasn’t lost his quirky lyrical content, which is a relief.  His brother Hologram also makes an appearance.

Aggressive Metal (prod. Seth Silenser) - Ayo, the instrumental for this one reminds me of the background music in the final (Cradle) level of Goldeneye on N64.  Nostalgia will get you everywhere in this case.  It has a cinematic vibe and Meyhem proves to be a worthy leading man, as his flow is supremely confident.

Badmon Ting (feat. Big Body Bes; prod. Farhot) - The latest single from the album is a fun one.  Bes arrives early with the wisecracks and Meyhem makes a Jamaican themed joint that’s similar in vein to the mid 90s hip hop/dancehall fusion joints that got played in any NYC neighborhood that featured West Indian population.  It’s like updated nostalgia.

Vintage (prod. Seth Silenser) - In the age of the same corny ass trap hi hats polluting songs everywhere, it’s so refreshing to see Seth Silenser expertly make use of hi hats. This song is deliciously evil sounding and Laurenovich casually breezes through his bars, which is all he had to do.
Bonus Round (feat. Action Bronson, Roc Marciano, & Big Body Bes; prod. Harry Fraud) - Back in December, Mary covered this posse cut and had nothing but good things to say about it.  I concur, this is classy and understated and enjoyable.  All of these dudes play together better than the Warriors here.

Money In My Pocket (prod. Farhot) - This is the best example of a Queens rapper on a California flavored beat since Nas in 1996.  Some songs you hear and just know that the hook will play well live.  This is one of those songs.  I’m already planning to play this at the WTM staff BBQ as I serve the team mission style tacos.

Not Guilty (prod. Large Professor) - As soon as I heard the trademark sleigh bells, I knew Extra P had laced this track.  He’s clearly had good fortune with rappers from Q Boro and the streak continues.  Meyhem punches the beat right in the breadbasket.  This is a timeless song for the streets.

Live Ginger (prod. DJ Muggs) - Man, I hadn’t heard from Muggs in awhile.  I’m glad Meyhem tapped him here for the beat.  This is one of those situations where you combine two ingredients that don't seem like they would work and they do.  The instrumental is wavering and trippy and somehow complements what are the rawest vocals on the whole damn album.  No hook here, but the ad-libs in between verses are kinda hilarious.

Garlic and Oil (feat. Action Bronson; prod. A Villa) - Everything I said about this song in March still applies in May.  It’s always good when you can look back and say a song ages well like good merlot.  And this one does.

Fuckin The Whole Crew (prod. Big French) - While Laurenovich does the braggadocio raps as good as anybody, it’s always a real treat when he goes with a storytelling record.  This one in particular is all in the title; a chick is making her rounds around the entire squad trying to be slick.  But in the end, the dudes are all in on it.  This is the beat that you play during a late night diner excursion, real swanky without being too conspicuous.

Hate (prod. Super Dave) - Using vocal samples can be tricky because you want them to be relevant to your song’s theme but without being overpowering.  It happens here as the focus stays on the 1960s cop show beat instead of the dialogue.  Meyhem uses an uncomplicated flow to complete the mix.

Flexxin (prod. Icerocks) - This entire compositions is fuckin FILTHY and I love it.  You have the cascading strings on the chorus, a bullying baseline, the ripest percussion, and the occasional fluttering piano.  This is musical paella.  Lauren refuses to let the instrumental go to waste and runs full court lyrically, including the formation of a great hook.

Dragon V.S. Wolf (feat. Action Bronson; prod. Alchemist) - Bronsolino makes his third guest appearance on an Alchemist-produced track.  And somehow, it sounds nothing like you’d think.  Instead of being dark and brooding, it’s more airy.  To be clear I don’t hate this song, and it’s not badly done, it just isn't my favorite collaboration between any combination of these three dudes.  Kind of out of place on the album too, and short.

Sweet Chick (prod. Icerocks) - First off, these guitars are wicked and demand attention off the bat.  Meyhem casually slaps the beat around and still has a good time on the penultimate track.  I feel like listening to this in the car would cause a speeding ticket because it lowkey brings so much energy.  Queens looks out for Queens on this one because while listening, I paused and made plans to go to the Nas owned restaurant of the same name.  It all came full circle.

Elevation (prod. DJ Muggs) - Muggs returns behind the boards for the grand finale.  His drums sound like machine guns, but not in the modern, stereotypical, lame trap/drill sense.  Laurenovich speaks in celebratory tones but stresses the need to always strive for better.  It’s actually really inspirational and a great way to end the album.

On his last joint, the entire album was produced by Buckwild of DITC.  This time, he uses an array of producers, not just the same.  The album nonetheless maintains a sense of cohesiveness.  It’s a tapestry but with more standout singles than the last one, which can only help him commercially.  While some I never heard of before now, Meyhem Lauren makes it work.  He has one of the best ear for beats in the game.  His lyricism is still on point and he fills his bars with references to Polo, wheat grass and ginger, the finest cuisine, and having a good time while not taking shit.  At the same time, he shows his storytelling chops and even makes a motivational song at the end.  Beyond being slept on, Laurenovich is also one of the most well rounded rappers in the game.

Rating: 4.75 out of 5.

Fool’s Gold Records and Meyhem Lauren have graciously put out this album for free (although I damn sure would've paid for it.  So click here for your free download of Piatto D’Oro.

LIsten: In Common by @aliciakeys {Written by @Natural_Nation}

It has been four years! Four years, since Alicia Keys released Girl on Fire; her fifth studio album. But, to my surprise, this past week Keys released a single titled In Common.

The song features an EDM sound with clear African influence and undertones. I'm sure there are those who would even stick this particular song in the realm of Caribbean dancehall. I can hear and see the sound she was going for but to me it came up short and a little flat. Who knows, maybe the song will grow on me but for now I'll be waiting for that album. Take a listen.

Listen: 4Momma - @SiRM00RE feat Jay Marv (prod by @DaKidGlass)

Sir Moore links up with Jay Marv for his brand new track 4Momma.

Considering Mother's Day was yesterday this was an ideal release saluting all the mothers out there. The New Jeru Native adds a smooth 90's vibe to this Glassc!ty produced ode to mom dukes. I remember Jay Marv on their track on summerDAZE. He adds soulful vocals on to the hook and bridge and this one two punch is audio excellence. Although it's a day late, everyday is Mother's Day. Play this for your mom, grandma, baby momma today, this goes out to you.

Listen: #TwerkiT - @sonREEM

I hinted at this new track by sonREEM a few days ago in my Editor's Picks.

#TwerkiT is the brand new single for his upcoming EP, UNIVERSE 7 slated to come out this year. I've kept an eye on this guy since the beginning and it's nice to see the coming out party finally about to happen. I've even had him freestyle on WTM back in the radio days. Watching an artist come into fruition is always a good feeling for me and I'm sure he's loving this new dance jam doing serious numbers as of late. I need yall to feel this Sounds Dope production after the break.

Live Reaction: #Lemonade visual album by @Beyonce {Written by @Natural_Nation}

So, now that a couple weeks have passed I am sure that EVERYONE has heard about Lemonade Beyonce's visual and audio album that dropped on April 23rd.

Whether you heard raving reviews about the hour long music video or happened to find out that "hot sauce" was really Bey's good friend the wooden bat I'm sure something Lemonade related has made it your way. But, if not, I happened to watch it. Some God-send happened to hit the DVR button and the album was sitting waiting for me after being taken off the air for it's one night only premiere on HBO. Early in the morning I sat in my family room, turned the lights off , grabbed a bowl of cereal and pressed play.

[INTUITION]
- Slow motion and scenery that is Beyonce's new niche.
- Okay turban with the hoodie. Giving me Howard University.
- Just in case you were wondering, yes, her hoodie does zipper from the back.
- Oh,so we're going to do spoken word?
- I don't know who this sista is but she is giving me life with her face.
- Turban number two.
- I need to know who's in charge of these visuals because the cinematography is on a bean.
- No girl don't jump!
Welp....there she goes.
[DENIAL]
- What is this like the five stages of grief?
- But do ya'll know how much air she had to exhale to stay down there like that, skills bruh.
- YASSS she is giving me draped floating oracles from 300.
- ARE YOU CHEATING ON ME?
- And when you ask they always look at you crazy.
- Okay flash back to Carmen
- ....This song kinda bump.
- Jealous or crazy? That's a great question
- Who does Beyonces weave!?
- Here she go rapping.
- ....Actually that's a wig, I think. Right? Travelle!
- Boobies, Jesus.
- Twirl Twirl TWIRLL!!!
- ....Am I part of the bee hive now?
- That twirl really just did something to me.
- Lol that laugh was so genuinely evil.
[ANGER]
- Yes grief stages then, basically.
- GIRL in the front yas with your pretty face!!
- ....A little Jeepers Creepers

Editor's Picks 5-1-16

Throwback Track: PM Dawn - Die Without You

I watched my favorite 90's movie this past weekend, Boomerang. Eddie Murphy was the man and his biggest issue was picking between Robin Givens and Halle Berry both in their prime. His best friends were David Alan Grier and Martin Lawrence and this awesome song was on the soundtrack. The 90's really had an odee amount of one hit wonder R&B male groups. I'm not complaining. Watch Die Without You after the break.

underground - exchange reemix

A few weeks back sonREEM blessed us with his remix to Bryson Tiller's Exchange. It's been a long time coming for this guy to start making waves on the Jersey scene. He's made music with Maxx Kenif recently and dropped his first single #TwerkiT a day ago for his new project he's announcing. It's clear there's a real Lil Wayne inspired sound to him. I won't spill too much too soon. Just click that play button below.

Song on Repeat: luhh - Future James

I'm a fan on synths and remixed tracks already made famous by others. Thus the reason I've kept Future James mix to At Your Best by Frank Ocean on repeat. If we loved Frank's remix to the Aaliyah classic I think you guys can get with this groovy mix of both. I need yall to feel this. Oh, thanks Triece!

Project of the Week: Back of My Lac' - J. Holiday

I guess this project serves as somewhat of a throwback as well. The debut of J. Holiday will probably always be in my music rotation. One could argue it as a classic, or at least I could. Bed, Suffocate, Be With Me, and Pimp In Me pretty much got me through high school (and Icebox by Omarion). It was only right to revisit it this week. Listen to it in its entirety below.

Editorial Review: Views - @Drake - (by @RamseySaidWHAT)

Never have I ever seen so many opinions of a single project within hours of it's release. That's just the kind of hype our northern neighbor Drake brings.

I was especially hesitant to write this review. First and foremost I am a Drizzy fan. I'm sure a few of you are gonna close out your window upon reading that last sentence.  If You're Reading This was recorded on the tour-bus, in a hotel, or wherever. It was a collection of songs. Drake returned home for the entire recording of this album. Take Care was the last result of what was recorded at home. It's something about going home and visiting the places that molded you. You backtrack and think about the people around you. Views is just a little more together than that. There are gaps where it doesn't make sense but sonically it's all together better than the former. The project kind of goes in chapters. Question is, he hasn't yet, but can Drake miss? Let's get to it.

Chapter One: Reflection

I'm a wine snob so I like to crack open a nice red and a bottle of water to ensure my listening experience. The mood in the beginning of the project was made for the wine drinkers out there. Keep the Family Close starts things off. Drake intros have been fairly weak in my opinion since his first Fireworks with Alicia Keys. The trend continues. The ongoing debate has been "Does Drake sing too much?" since 2009. The first few tracks he trades spitting and singing throughout these tracks. 9 just doesn't do it for me. It could for you possibly but the beat wasn't entertaining enough for the verses to be so dull. The content and reflection was good but he kind of just rapped on one, two, and three and let the song play beat for then the next few bars for Drake to return in the following bar. We on the radio call this dead air.

The next song, U With Me? starts with a DMX sample of and boom-bap percussion. Synths get the tone in the classic 40 tone as expected. Kanye, Faith Evans, DJ Dahi & more also have production and songwriting credits on this jawn. This is the first track Drake sets the tone with his rap verses rather than singing. The second half of the song serves as a ballad of all the things he rapped about, his relationships. Feel No Ways heads back to singing but this time upbeat and bouncy. He's still reflecting on his exes and how they act towards him. Frankly, the 6 God feels no way like the song says, why should he.

Chapter Two: Don't You Know Who I Am?

Hype is as hype says. Drake is really in his bag. Let's think about it. Dude put his country on his back, put the label on his back, goes plat without effort, and is the new ambassador for the Raptors. Shoot he won a major beef and probably didn't write any of the words to the diss track (lol). Seriously, Hype is dope, this is the head knocker you guys were looking for. Weston Road Flows is probably one of my favorites on Views. Time and time again I say Drake's best songs are the ones he just raps on without a hook or any kind of song structure. He does well when he's just trying to spill all which brings me right back to my 30 for 30 argument a few months back. The sample is dope using Mary J. Blige's Joint record. I only knew this song because I always mixed it with I'm So Into You by SWV in my 90's sets. Redemption takes a page out of chapter one but still provides to braggadocios flow Drake gave us in the past few songs. Short mentions of women in his past life and how they eat their hearts out knowing Drizzy is one of the hottest things out. If you listen close enough you can hear Ray J's beginning of One Wish. This song is the perfect link to the next chapter or mood of this project.

Chapter Three: Climax

With You has the first feature on Views from the 6. Who better than PARTYNEXTDOOR? It's bouncy and doesn't have those dark undertones that we are used to hearing from either of them, to be honest. It's fun. Faithful serves as my absolute favorite on the project. It features a posthumous verse from Pimp C which was actually a quick 8 from the Tom Ford remix. Faithful kind of sounds like two different tracks when dvsn comes in and steals the show. I always enjoy being put on to new music and a good friend put me on with the Toronto singer/producer duo a few weeks ago. I actually just found out they are the newest signees to OVO Sound. Faithful is flat-out excellent all around. dvsn has this mysterious undertone much like the other artists discovered by Drizzy. Unfortunately, Still Here is another one of those songs that didn't keep my attention. This song may be the first actual skip. I think what makes artists like Drake and Jay-Z great is their ability to adapt to the times and the trends while adding their own flavor to a song. Drake succumbs to the trendy druggy, swag flow here and I'm not impressed.

Chapter Four: The Dancehall

I was just saying the other day to my friends that I wanted to go to a reggae party even if it's in the grimiest part of Queens. I did make my way to a bar last weekend and Controlla coupled with the next track were in heavy rotation. Controlla was my favorite track he gave up as a loosie before the album dropped. I was hurt when he took Popcaan off the album version. He did change the sound and production by Boi-1da is a little different than the single version. It's a nice change. He could have dropped an entire reggae album and it would have been A-OK with me.

One Dance follows up. You guys have heard this one kill radio waves and those basement parties where every girl is trying to listen to Drake. This is the singing Drake the thugs will compromise with their girls for. Wizkid and Kyla compliment and add to the song perfectly. I just wish I had like four more songs like these. I'll get one, but we'll talk about that later.

Chapter Five: Changing Flows

Grammys features Future. This very well could have been a track that didn't make What A Time To Be Alive. It's just another song that shows the versatility of Drake. From singing to the dancehall to gritty rapping. I guess all of his songs sound like Drake featuring Drake after all. Child's Play is kinda cool. This track flips from a house feel to a beat breakdown at the beginning of the second hook. Can't put my ears to where the sample without hitting up who sampled. It's an old New Orleans bounce track by Ha-Sizzle. Pop Style originally had The Throne involved. Jay didn't really rap but said two lines in the beginning and Kanye finished the other 14 to complete a 16. When he took them off it was almost unnoticeable. Too Good featuring Rihanna could have been placed in the Dancehall chapter earlier on. I really like this track between the West Indian percussion style to verses by Drake and RiRi. The duo have always flat-out made good music. If my math is right this makes their forth collaboration.

Chapter Six - Concluding the Six

Summers Over Interlude is pretty cool. It's retrospective like we'd expect. I wish it were a full song and will make the playlist I have of really good interludes that needed to be full-length with Girl With the Tattoo, 101, Lady in the Glass Dress and more. Majid Al Maskati from Majid Jordan sings throughout this Maneesh-produced track. Fire and Desire samples my baby Moesha, I mean Brandy's I Dedicate. Drake lets the slow interlude dictate the pace. I'd really like my hands on an instrumental of this one. The self-titled, Views samples one of my favorite Gospel songs by the Winans Brothers. The clip reminds me of my dad blasting gospel music to wake me up for church then the music changed to gritty rap like how I was when I put my headphones on playing Breathe by Fabolous while brushing my teeth. Views goes back to his hookless rapping. Drake's emcee skills aren't as good as I think they are and aren't as bad as you think they are. He just doesn't do it enough point-blank. Hotline Bling finishes up the project (Just click the link).

This album was long. It's twenty tracks and has a few songs we've heard beforehand. In some instances, they wouldn't have been missed. He did change at least one thing to all of the songs we've previously heard which gave us a different flavor. I was surprised Summer Sixteen didn't make the cut. I would have loved that over Hotline Bling. Summers Over was the only interlude and even that was almost two minutes. I only listened to this project all the way through once. I thought it lacked cohesion but I was wrong. It was meant to be listened to in pieces, thus the review was done in six chapters for the six God. Views is the first full-length Drake review I've ever written before AOTY time. My analysis: Views from the Six is 40's masterpiece and definitely his best work. I wouldn't call this album Drake's best but it's his best-produced project. Since people like Jay comparisons this is his Magna Carta Holy Grail. It's super-produced but not his best work as far as content. Not terrible, but not the best. I say this with love, Drizzy has enough life experience to give us more of him. That's what the true goal of an artist is right? Views from the Six gets a 4.17 of 5 Stars on the Ramsey Rating Scale.

Listen: Lost - @Olawumiii feat. @SorryKhary (Prod. by @CloudAtrium)

Olawumi and Cloud Atrium together add one more to their musical ménage, Khary Durgans.

I always speak about growth when it comes to Olawumi. Olawumi has clearly found her sound and style, but as time has gone she's grown as a artist and perhaps a person. Lost is her most lyrical thusfar and the deepest dive into her thusfar from all of her releases. Khary comes in at the end reflects on his own rendezvous with love. Lost is track four in her thefeels series. Word on the street is she's cooking up a new EP titled Emote which could arrive this year. In the meantime listen to Lost after the break.
