I remember Jay Marv on their track on summerDAZE. He adds soulful vocals on to the hook and bridge and this one two punch is audio excellence. Although it's a day late, everyday is Mother's Day. Play this for your mom, grandma, baby momma today, this goes out to you.

DJ SuchNSuch makes an appearance on the new Sir Moore video for someDAZE.

After he gives his just due, Sir Moore rolls out of bed and attacks the day. Smooth boom-bap 90's feeling beat follows the radio skit and Sir Moore drops his 16. You can definitely feel the aesthitic of the golden age in his music and the trend continues with this one. Ikenna drops in with a guest verse of his own and shines himself. Check it out for yourself after the break. We're still looking forward to the follow up to summerDAZE. Thus far the songs following his debut have been nothing short of special.

Paterson, NJ songstress Keyvauna Leshea newest offering LuvGroove has caught our ears and I'm sure yours too.

This M. Fasol produced track is super soulful and is for the real R&B fans. I often think there are more rappers than every other kind of artist in the general area and everywhere. Hearing a beautiful voice like Keyvuana's is super refreshing. The first time I remember hearing her is on a few tracks on Sir Moore's summerDAZE dropped a year ago. Her sensational voice blesses this feel good song and I could picture dancing with my girlfriend in the living room to this. She even takes time out to pay homage in a R. Kelly Chocolate Factory kind of way. Listen to LuvGroove for yourself below.

Sir Moore performing at SABLE's Hip-Hop SOULcase

When an artist debuts at such a high level and stature it's hard to see them develop over time. It's safe to say Sir Moore has far from plateaued.

I like this young man because of the message he always conveys. Positive Vibes Only. This coined theme has continued to trend into his music. In a new track he spits over A Tribe Called Quest's Electric Relaxation sample done beautifully by JR Jarris.

NoBadVibesss is one of the first singles we've heard from Sir Moore in a while. This time I doubt it's just a freeVIBE as we can expect a project in the fall as mentioned by the New Jeru Native himself. Keep it locked until then, and as always NoBadVibes. I need you all to feel this.

This time Sir Moore releases something for the ladies. Aintnoluvsong is one of those songs most definitely for the ladies. Fellas, if you're anything like me you might wanna throw this one in your slow jams deluxe playlist you ashamed you have on spotify. Don't front guys. Sir Moore didn't. HOMEMADE by SoULFULL EP Review by Niles P.

It’s rare that when I truly get introduced to the music of an up-and-coming artist and it’s someone for which I have no frame of reference.

This would be a rapper without a guest verse on a song you like or affiliation with one of your favs. Such was the case when I had SOULFULL’s debut EP HOMEMADE sent to me for review. To tell the truth, I’m usually leery of projects by new up and coming rappers. Most seemingly try to replicate Chicago drill music or southern trap music or both. It’s the same bland rhymes over easily-duplicated beats (y’all know how I feel about that goddamn snare roll). Soulfull thankfully bypasses all of that and lives up to his stage name and delivers a soulful debut that seems to really come organically.


He was most known for shooting the video for labelmate Sir Moore's selfLOVE. It was assumed that he was the videographer for the New Jeru Natives at that time. Let's fast forward to now.

The Franklin, New Jersey emcee pairs a gruff flow over serene and easygoing beats. He raps over a 9th Wonder beat on the romantic iFOUNDu. He uses similar beats that are both tranquil and sample heavy. On meettheparents he raps from the perspective of his own father giving advice and encouragement while simultaneously explaining why he parented how he did growing up.  This is a concept track that most new rap dudes don’t attempt.  He also uses a clip from the movie Baby Boy to set up loveHATE which talks about ups and downs in relationships.  Soulfull even uses skitONE to simultaneously joke about the patch in Rasheed Wallace’s head and then freestyle with his friends. FINALwordz serves as a fitting outro and features some of the best saxophone work this side of a Statik Selektah beat.

Soulfull has a Jamla type sound, which is in sharp contrast with most of the new young rappers out.  I can appreciate witty punchlines and street tales sometimes but it’s always refreshing to hear rhymes that come from the heart and reflect on everyday things that anyone can relate to. This EP sounds like something recorded in somebody’s bedroom and I mean that in the best way possible. You can tell that this dude simply loves hip-hop and writes from his heart and soul (hence the name).

He avoids a lot of rookie pitfalls on this project. Guest appearances are limited to three singers on three separate hooks which helps us get to know Soulfull and get familiar with his rapping style. The EP is 10 tracks, which consists of eight songs and two skits/freestyles. Being a new dude you can tell at times that he’s still feeling his way around, in a manner of speaking. But it’s his first project so he’ll become more polished the more he writes and records, the more he’ll hone his skills. He already has a niche without being run-of-the-mill and has an excellent ear for beats that sound different from what’s popular for most new jacks. Homemade is a great start for Soulfull, now it’s up to him to reel us all in.  Can’t wait. Rating: 4.85 out of 5

#IME 9/21 - Ramsey

In My Ears: Week of September 21st, 2014

This week has been spent writing and shooting a lot of different stuff. I haven't really spent the time listening to new music except for what's been submitted to me. Well that and these few things that stood out in my earphones this week. Check it out below.

Albums of the Week: Hall of Fame by Big Sean & PARTYNEXTDOOR2 - PARTYNEXTDOOR

It's safe to say Hall of Fame went fairly unnoticed in the hip-hop scene except for the week it dropped. It's really an underrated album. We just spent our time listening to a lot of other dope much last year. Sit and listen to Ashley featuring Miguel, Fire, 10 2 10, Switch Up featuring Common, and of course beware with Jhene Aiko and Lil Wayne. Do it now before you listen to Drake or Hova again.

Most people's complaint about this album is it sounds like one giant song put together. I spent a lot of time in my car, coming back from the bar or a shoot this week. When you're a little turnt (I in no way condone drunk driving so I had a designated driver I promise), this album is pure crack. I revisited it once the Wale remix to Thirsty dropped last week. Go head, grab a beer, a glass of vino and turn the bass on your subwoofer up.

Song on Repeat: Sixteen by Rick Ross featuring Andre 3000

People tend not understand Three stacks when he gets to babbling. Truth is, he's not. he's always telling a story but I guess people take it for a grain of salt. Kinda like that great uncle you have that's always a little too turnt at the family barbecue and when he get finished his two step he reminisce about the good ole days. Oh, and Rick Ross spit fire too. 16 bars, it could never be enough.   

Throwback Jawn: Black N Gold by Wale

This song, is straight fuego (spanish for fire) to the ears. I could never get enough of this time. In fact I'm listening to it as I type. There'll be More About Nothing (that's a play on words, just peep WTM tonight) later on today around 8 PM. Stay tuned.

Indie Track: thefeelin by Sir Moore

Rounding out what I've been listening to this week is Sir Moore. His second project dropped last week and it's definitely been on repeat. thefeelin samples the classic Sexual Healing, and everyone needs a little Marvin Gaye. Great production, tight lyrics equals great song. Want my full opinion on this, read WTM review of summerDAZE.

Sir Moore with friends at Album Listening BBQ

Every time I link up with my cousins and friends, we reminisce on childhood, The whole 90's yards.

I get that same feeling when I listened to summerDAZE for the first time. I think as a music fan your greatest pet peeve is when you're favorite artist pushes back a project. Sometimes you have to understand that it's for a reason so they can put together a piece of work that will surpass the standard set for themselves and for your ears. summerDAZE being pushed back was the best thing for the project. If you haven't paid attention Jersey emcee Sir Moore preaches about positive energy revolving his life and how it should yours.

Let's get to the music.  Lots of R&B samples and influences from movies and television from the 90s. The tape is full of samples from Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Love Jones, Martin, Do The Right Thing (although that dropped in 89), We also got a couple more DJ SuchNSuch skit like his debut EP AUGUSTrush. Ole dude is hilarious but spits the truth if you really listen. The entire project is so relatable if you didn't live under a rock your whole life.

It was difficult to pick a song I liked most of these 22 tracks. They all stood out in their own way. It's not all reminiscing, Sir Moore touches base on social issues plaguing our community with songs like summerRAIN. Another song I enjoyed was BackNtheDay featuring Keyvauna Leshea. LONGLIVEHIPHOP! (the anthem) would be the kind of song I would drop if I were an artist (Man I wish I could rap, that's why I just write I guess). Every song, feature, and sample were intricately placed and the production was superb. You could make love to this. Listen, if you are a hip-hop head like myself and want to teach a lover the way to listen and hear the way you do, pop in this album and press play. Thank Me Later no Drizzy.

Jose Vay (Joe V in spanish yall lol) is just one of those people you meet that you will remember forever. If not for the music, I'd still look to him to be a leader of our generation. It's Deeper than the Music, but music is the key to the soul. Be weary of what your ears take in. When it's raining and you are staring outside your window listening to R&B making a fake music video out of your life, change the music. summerDAZE is the album for you. summerDAZE got 4.6 of 5 stars on the Ramsey Rating Scale. A Sit Down with Quincy Savage

Everyone says "Let's Build" and usually nothing happens after that.

It took me close to two weeks to link up with the artist formerly known as DanQwelle aka Quincy Savage but it finally got done. I got to chance to shoot a few questions to the Neptune Emcee before he left for the Navy again. Check out the quick Q&A below.

WTM: First and Foremost, What is your stage name now? Lord knows you've changed it a few times.

Quincy Savage: The Stage name is Quincy Savage, DanQwelle got annoying.

WTM: We spoke a few years back before Far From Nothing dropped. We were talking about the Wale influence and watching That 70's Show. Did the tape come out the way you wanted?

QS: I'm not gonna lie Wale was an influence on the early writing, but it's changed. It leans more towards the Capitol STEEZ, Kendrick Lamar, and a little bit of Chance the Rapper. I'm finally starting to find myself musically. My sound, my boundaries, my flow, everything basically I'm starting to have fun with it and I like it, a lot. I'm still working on a 70's show tape.

WTM: Me and Wil G go back and I didn't know he was rapping now. I know he's an amazing drummer and picking up producing. He was great on the tape, how'd you guys meet and go about the features?

QS: Bruh, Wil G is amazing. His work ethic is so laid back but yet it's sophisticated. He knows what he wants which is a direct relation to his....stubborn like persona lol but it fits me and Jah perfectly. He gives us the biggest confidence boost in the studio. We met up soon after I made my first song off Adrian's laptop. I forget exactly but it led to me hearing his work which I liked a lot. The features are becoming more of a work instead of a last minute cram session. You'll see the difference between Don't F*ck with Me & All Day All Night both featuring Wil G...the energy and chemistry is becoming unstoppable. He has a very keen ear for music.

WTM: Is there anyone in the industry you look up to? Anyone you'd like to work with in the future?

QS: Super Duper Kyle. He's an indie artist I've been listening to for a while. His album Beautiful Loser is a low key hit. Chance the Rapper off Acid Rap alone I just think we'd do damage on something. Ab Soul because we'd find ourselves erasing and editing our rhymes trying to do something crazy. WTM: I been on Kyle for a minute and I swear no one heard of him out in Cali until you just said it. He look exactly like Drake in the face too lol. How do you feel about the current state of Jersey's music scene and where do you stand in all of that?

QS: I think we're too focused on sounding like somebody instead of finding our (their) own sound. A rapper hits the scene, everybody sounds like hiim. I'm trying to change that. Convince people to be themselves and just have fun with what they do. There's too many followers. (Hinting at my Outro record)

WTM: My definition of art is anything that could be loved and crafted to perfection whether it's music, visual art, film, photography, anything really. What is your personal definition of art and how it pertains to you?

QS: Not trying to sound cliche, but art is life. It's what we make of it. If art is a relationship then that's your idea of art. Music is life to me. So they can go hand and hand. My version of art is music. Putting thoughts into words into a pattern that can tell a story and also rhyme at the same time. That's an art. It's a power.

WTM: What has the military and all the travelling done to your music career? Has it hindered it or helped by giving you new experiences and stories?

QS: The military has only hindered my studio time. No doubt, I'd be making way more music but the military is helping me understand other cities and how they rock and their lingo so that way I can tap into their style of music whenever I want.Or say something that makes a Cali n*gga or female say "Oh sh*t that's our word" or " He knows his sh*t you know?" Kinda like a culture shock. It expands my vocabulary a lot. I know now what a more broad perspective of people wanna hear. So when I jump in the booth, or when I go write some shit I think of that. Now it's whether or not I wanna try to mesh the Jersey style into it. Might as well right?

WTM: Lastly, The name of the game is What's the Movement? So that's the last question, any projects, videos, tours coming up soon. Let the people know.

QS: Changed the group name. It's now The League. Trying to call the next tape either #ShoreKnights #BoyindaCorner or #FarFromNothing2. Jah should have a project coming soon. He cookin' up as we speak. Wil working on some sh*t that sound crazy, that's hook master flex lol. I'm also trying to put a permanent camp together. Me Jah, Tyrasia as the main artists. Tryna get essO in on it too. Yaya on the Networking C/O. Tryna get a hold of my boy Zay I hear he's good at the managing. Faheem as the photographer, so on...you'll see soon.

Hip-Hop Soulcase Recap

And all the white girls can suck my what???

I guess you had to be there to understand that line but all and all the event was beyond dopeness. I cannot continue this review without saying this first: Huge shoutout to the first lady of WTM Ashanti Jones. She is the VP of S.A.B.L.E at WPUNJ and the event was completely her doing. I have watched her slave for months and work her behind off to make it the success that it was.

Okay lets begin. Unorthodox but the headliners of the event went first. Striver's Row members Miles Hodges and Alysia Harris tore the stage up. They spit some new pieces were read but they spit some of their own classics like Cab Rides and the Morning After and Harlem. Next up were the promised performers and an open mic. The Hip-Hop SOULcase never had a dull moment. Students from Willy P showed their stuff whether it be poetry, hip-hop or even neo-soul. MotaRaps, Olawumi, D.O.P.E, Khalil Jibran, & Sir Moore kept the crowd entertained throughout. There was nothing but good vibes when they all hit the stage. The crowd really responded to a freestyle by Khalil Jibran and you can see below.

Shortly afterwards, Conway & Mayday (D.O.P.E) got the crowd hype with their live performance of She Likes (off Orientation), and Sir Moore finished off the show with songs of the August Rush EP over the classic Fugees song, Killing Me Softlyinstrumental. All in all, this was a dope showcase and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Keep on the lookout for the next event and clips from this one. Always remember where you heard it first. A Poetry & Hip-Hop SOULcase 2/25

Tonight there won't be a broadcast of WTM as I have said in recent weeks because of an in-studio concert held at the radio station. So now that you won't be tuned into my show you can head to the Multipurpose room in the student center of WPUNJ. The event features poets Miles Hodges & Alysia Harris of the Striver's Row poetry group. I don't know if you have heard of them but these guys are legit. The event is also an open-mic for those of you who want to showcase their skills, poetry, or just have something to get off your mind. DJ Nix in the Mix will be on the wheels of steel.

There will be performances by a few artists including : Sir Moore, Khalil Jibran, Mota Raps, Olawumi, & D.O.P.E. All of whom have been in studio on What's the Movement. There will something for everybody, poets, dancers, singers, rappers - just pure, chill hip-hop vibes, that's word to Ashanti Jones. Shoutouts to her, the women of SABLE, and the brothers of Iota Phi Theta for co-sponsoring the event. Hope to see you there, you don't want to miss out on this one.

Editor's Opinion: Reading List

Most bloggers don't do this but uhh....

What's the Movement was a sparkle in my eye about three years ago. Two years ago I sparked the blog via tumblr (featuring the #AOTY lists), a year ago the radio show was formatted, and a little longer than a month ago the site launched. I guess most blog authors have the same real goal. Popularity with readers and develop a brand with advertising support. Generally, they stray away from each other (speaking from experience). There is a lot of professionalism between us and general respect for one another (especially if we have worked together). Anyways with the same goal and interests it seems we are in competition with one another. Perhaps I am foolish for feeling this way but I see otherwise.

WTM was created for others to showcase their work. It was founded on the basis of support; support not just for artists, singers, photographers, producers, models, but for everyone. WTM is not just about music and I don't want to blackball myself and create a brand based on only that (don't get me wrong, we do seem to have a specialty there). I keep saying WTM is going to expand to sports, fashion, style, politics, culture and also continuing an art standpoint. With all of that said, below is a list of blogs and websites I read on a Daily Basis because their work is great. (Along with other publications and twitter pages I follow) They have spent the time to filter out whatever the media is trying to feed you and only give you what I like to call "That Raw." I hope you enjoy the way I have and will continue to do as a viewer.

Deeper Than the Music with Sir Moore & Khalil Jibran

Snowed out Tuesday equals Late Night Friday.

 Between chilly weather, precipitation, and campus police alarm settings, hosting WTM on our normal Tuesday night time slot was impossible. All setbacks lead to a better opportunity. The station gave us the go so we convened WTM on a prime time Friday Night from 10 pm-1 am. Well we didn't let the snow stop us from this dope sit in with Sir M00RE & Khalil Jibran. Of course we spoke about both of the artists and their projects and upcoming events. 

Khalil came in with a few announcements to make. The first of which was an announcement of his upcoming mixtape Rain On a SUNday which is expected to release on February 14th. I asked why Valentine's Day and he explained the oxymoron of the title. He got into his R&B roots and disclosed the smoothness of the project. "We don't have music for rainy Sundays where you can just look out the window and listen," he says. Valentine's day seems perfect in my eyes for something that soulful. Later on in the broadcast we played one of the tracks off that tape titled Please Just Get Away from Me featuring The Olawumii.

Throughout the segment we chopped it up with Sir Moore. We talked about his first ever EP, August Rush. He discussed the name and inspiration behind these six tracks. We also got a little off-topic and broke into his relationship with The Strivers' Row Poetry members and fellow NJ Emcee, Moruf. He filmed the show Moruf had with Jasmine Mans earlier this month in Newark. Joe V and August Rush was featured in Garden State Hip-Hop's "10 NJ Rappers to look for in 2014" article ran by Rodney Coursey.

Following the inteviews both artist had a killer freestyle to multiple instrumentals old and new. Both of them killed their spot. All in all both artists have a crazy 2014 coming up on the way. Glad to have gotten them on the show before greatness occurs. Clips from the freestyle will be posted at a later on, tune in.
