A Poetry & Hip-Hop SOULcase 2/25

Tonight there won't be a broadcast of WTM as I have said in recent weeks because of an in-studio concert held at the radio station. So now that you won't be tuned into my show you can head to the Multipurpose room in the student center of WPUNJ. The event features poets Miles Hodges & Alysia Harris of the Striver's Row poetry group. I don't know if you have heard of them but these guys are legit. The event is also an open-mic for those of you who want to showcase their skills, poetry, or just have something to get off your mind. DJ Nix in the Mix will be on the wheels of steel.

There will be performances by a few artists including : Sir Moore, Khalil Jibran, Mota Raps, Olawumi, & D.O.P.E. All of whom have been in studio on What's the Movement. There will something for everybody, poets, dancers, singers, rappers - just pure, chill hip-hop vibes, that's word to Ashanti Jones. Shoutouts to her, the women of SABLE, and the brothers of Iota Phi Theta for co-sponsoring the event. Hope to see you there, you don't want to miss out on this one.

Editor's Opinion: Reading List

Most bloggers don't do this but uhh....

What's the Movement was a sparkle in my eye about three years ago. Two years ago I sparked the blog via tumblr (featuring the #AOTY lists), a year ago the radio show was formatted, and a little longer than a month ago the site launched. I guess most blog authors have the same real goal. Popularity with readers and develop a brand with advertising support. Generally, they stray away from each other (speaking from experience). There is a lot of professionalism between us and general respect for one another (especially if we have worked together). Anyways with the same goal and interests it seems we are in competition with one another. Perhaps I am foolish for feeling this way but I see otherwise.

WTM was created for others to showcase their work. It was founded on the basis of support; support not just for artists, singers, photographers, producers, models, but for everyone. WTM is not just about music and I don't want to blackball myself and create a brand based on only that (don't get me wrong, we do seem to have a specialty there). I keep saying WTM is going to expand to sports, fashion, style, politics, culture and also continuing an art standpoint. With all of that said, below is a list of blogs and websites I read on a Daily Basis because their work is great. (Along with other publications and twitter pages I follow) They have spent the time to filter out whatever the media is trying to feed you and only give you what I like to call "That Raw." I hope you enjoy the way I have and will continue to do as a viewer.

Reading List
1. The Come Up Radio
2. Artistic Manifesto
3. Scoob Daily
4. Penthouse Radio
5. Garden State Hip Hop
6. The Joe V Show (Sir M00re*)
7. Olawumi Art (Olawumi*)
8. Michael Medium
9. Brave New Radio
10. Black Fashion
11. Hip-Hop Today

Listen: Good Loving - Eramatics featuring Brianna Mulzac

Post Valentine's Day the New York Trio released a suave love ballad.

QuietMan Samford Interview

Stay strong! ✊
QuietMan Samford
QuietMan Samford (Issac Kemp) hails all the way from Flint, MI. Upon the release of his first single Is This What You Really Want featuring little brother Jonah, I got to hop on the phone and do a quick Q&A with the Midwest artist. Check that out below.

WTM: How did you come up with the name QuietMan Sam?

QMS: The name QuietManSamford came about freestyling one night with two of my folks you know lol. Up til about 4am just going and that name rang out. Definitely had to go with it.

WTM: My definition of Art is anything that can be loved or crafted to perfection, What is your personal Definition?

QMS: My definition of Art is simple. A productive skill expressively obtained.

WTM: We grew up with a ball in our hands playing sports and running around. When did you know music and poetry is what you wanted to do?

QMS: Writing was always a great tool for me. It made the process of writing music very lucid for me. Poetry came about first, from there on my thought with music grew over the years as I continued to realize I could make a difference.

WTM: From what I've been hearing, you have been making a lot of noise in your area. What are you doing to showcase your talent? When is the date of your album release?

QMS: The album is set to release June 7th, 2014.

WTM: If you can work with anyone in the industry who would it be? Producers? Guest Verses?

QMS: If I could work with anyone in the game it would be Kenny G or maybe J. Cole.

WTM: When you listen to some artists you can hear other artists in their sound and voice. Your sound is unique and doesn't sound like anybody. How do you do it? Who would you say is your musical influence?

QMS: Certainly so, my music was inspired by a unique variety of lyrical artists. Brother Tupac Shakur was most definitely an influence on my music. I was also inspired by R&B music.

WTM: A lot of people don't know Flint is one of the most dangerous cities in the USA short of Chi-town and Camden, NJ. How do you keep your head above water with all the crime and distractions?

QMS: Positivity is key. Too much negative energy can hurt the progressive of any process. Flint is just like any other city in the US. I don't think about the distractions. When you have a plan you must set goals for yourself and keep your faith in God to reach them. The focus of someone has to be a force in order for any mission to be accomplished.

WTM: Your first single off the album features your little brother, how old is he? Who influenced him to sing at such a young age? Does he write his own lyrics? Can we expect him to do a solo project in the near future?

QMS: Yes my first official single is with little bro, he's ten years old now. I'm not honestly sure who influenced him to sing at such a young age, but pops always pushed him. He doesn't write his own lyrics but when he learns that'll be great.

WTM: The name of the show is What's the Movement?! So, what is your movement? What's next for you? Albums/Mixtapes/Projects? Tours?

QMS: My movement is #924EVER #NobodyBigYet ; much love to my @NobodyBigYet family. After the album in June drops I really want to help release an album for my brother at least as a song writer. Great quality music for an eleven year old (in which he will be then). It's titled Don't Forget to Keep Dreaming. Definitely looking to take some tour trips for sure. Seeing the world, that's important to me. I have to thank God first and foremost. Thanks to my family, big bro, and all my brothers serving in the armed forces. Thanks to all my fans and friends that support me, and my lady for sure. Peace and Love! '92 4EVER

Just Did It!

Not long ago, Royal Throne writer Queen Ogunyinka wrote a piece on who would be the first to pull a Beyonce and drop a surprise project that will sell as well or better than she (you can find that column here). Turns out it wasn't even in the music industry. Nike Just Did It. The billion dollar corporation decided to surprise drop the infamous Red October Air Yeezy 2's. Before today you couldn't even find them on retail shelves anywhere and the cheapest they've gone for on ebay included at least 3 zeros behind the first digit. Nike decides to drop them for $245 retail and they sold out in less than 15 minutes. That's insanity at it's finest.

Non sneaker heads don't really understand the severity of the situation but it's monumental. It's part of the reason Kanye West left Nike in the first place (along with issues about designs, royalties, etc.). What's really surprising is that FootLocker dropped the original release date for the holiday season as you can see below.
As expected, surprise releases are going to trend. In music there is no way to leak albums if there is no promotion for it. If no one knows what's going on, no one can steal. The only flaw is that with no promotion there is no promise there will be positive sales (in the eyes of labels and corporations). Thus far that has been proven wrong. Beyonce's self-titled album has sold three million copies and counting as of January 2014 and was the fastest album sold in one day in iTunes history. This morning, Nike was able to sell out of nearly 5,000 pairs of Air Yeezy's in 15 minutes. Will this trend continue in any other industries? I guess we will find out together.
