Listen: Who Da Man? - @lowcollege (prod. @qdottdavis)
In: CivXSav, Joe College, Qdottdavis By: Jonathan C. Ramsey
Time for the re-up.
It was about time for the return of the CivXSav artist. Joe College already told us to Pay the Man. If you didn't know before you definitely know now who the man is. In fact that's the title of his new single produced by frequent collaborator, Qdottdavis.
You can definitely hear it too. No more mister slick talk. It's still smooth but definitely more rugged than ever before and just in time for the summer. Q starts his production with a dark and somber pipe flute and brings in contrasting percussion. That kick is nice for the car speakers trust me. Look out, I think this may be the year he gets over the hump, whatever the hump is. Watch out and throw on Who Da Man? after the break.

Album Review: GHOST EP - @Shhh_imSPEAKING (written by @RamseySaidWHAT)
In: Anything (The Note Pt. 2), Girl #3, Little Biddy Girl By: Jonathan C. Ramsey
February 9th, Sis performed at our R&B and Poetry Night, FEELSLIKERNB in New Brunswick. She didn't perform much of her own original music and none of her new stuff. She is big on covers so it was nice hearing her perform the Erykah Badu classic, Tyrone. If you follow
her on social media you'll see what she's listening to and mashing up. I
think she is perfect at acoustic guitar ballads. We'll talk about it
more later. It left me curious to what she had on tuck because I knew she was in the studio preparing this EP. I was especially interested to see where she was headed musically. Her debut project, Girl #3 was an experiment in Sis's personal life trying music, even if it was a long time plan in the works. Which takes us to now, GHOST EP is what's in our headphones today. Let's get to it.
Avoiding sophomore slump is the think that makes or breaks new artists. Girl #3 is as good of a debut EP that any R&B listener could ask for. Little Biddy Girl is a wonderful introduction track to a project. It's so introspective, good momentum builder. I really enjoy she's taking more chances instead of kind of navigating us through the verses and hooks.
If you're listening while reading it's at this point we really see her minister this song to us. The riffs at the aforementioned lyrics is the very moment we feel what she's singing. You can tell she really believes what she's saying which is so important. Sis sets the tone in a little more cynical but serious way. Me, Myself, and I does the same. It shows off her range from tenor to alto to mezzo soprano throughout. She's seasoned and dablles throughout the spectrum vocally. There was a moment I though I was listening to Teyana Taylor when Blame comes on. Not so much from her voice but a particular run sounded like something the G.O.O.D. music artist would sing. I think it's the best produced track on here and sure enough Qdottdavis is behind the beat on this one.
Next up is the lead single, Stuck in the Moment. I can still listen to it even if I've been bumping it for months before the project. In fact I hope there's a video treatment for it. That's the one thing we haven't gotten from Sis to this point is a music video. We can use some visuals especially considering she has some talented friends in her back pocket. Stuck in the Moment has a music video in my head and I'm interested to see if the concept gets some love on our small screens.
In our A-Side B-Side Interview we talked about how she wanted to give people just a taste. I believe mystery serves Sis well which speaks to her songwriting prowess. Anything serves as the sequel to The Note PT 1 from her previous project. Much like part one it's an acoustic ballad that I love hearing Sis on. I think that's a wonderful niche that could be if she ever wanted it to be. The story left off with her waking up to a Dear John on the other side of the bed where her lover should be laying. She described how she made plans for her day and probable life with him but he was gone. Part Two is a little less sad but still longing what could have been. She spends more time explaining to him what they could be rather than what they are currently.
Girl #3 is a young woman taking ownership and coming out of her shell. It's a statement saying, "I am important whether I'm the star or an extra and I won't be overlooked." Ghost feels like a girl already out but knows what she wants. If you miss out on her, then that's on you. Musically some songs sonically travel in a circle. The beginnings and ends kind of sound the same. Takes you somewhere then back to the original chord progression. I feel like when you listen to Ghost you'll find new things every time you re-listen. If I put it on repeat for months, stopped listening then came back to it a year later, I'd still find something different than my last listen. It's just about the same length as her debut as she stated she likes EPs better. Girl #3 was a women's empowerment project, and that's who she markets to. GHOST is clearly still directed towards the ladies, but it's probably easier on the ears for men to listen to than the previous. Not that her debut wasn't an easy listen, but the general R&B listener will like this better because it's more modern on a production tip. No matter how catchy and hard it was we won't be singing in the shower about the name of our p**sy on this one I promise. Ghost has less spectacle and more refinery. Don't get me wrong, Bite was expertly written and meant to be taken seriously. Still I must admit, when you hear the lyrics it grabs your attention. no matter if it has a much deeper meaning. It's an ear grabber on first listen. Especially considering it was her first single ever and usually the opening song of her live sets. It's first impression is loud and brash, but Little Biddy Girl has the same volume as Bite if that makes sense. It's a blinking eyes and raised eyebrows gif reaction that you have to settle into; however when you do you, it's easy see (and hear) that Sis is one of the most talented songstresses in NJ, period. GHOST EP is out everywhere you listen to music. You can press play and hear it for yourself below. I need you to feel this.

Review: Pay the Man - @lowcollege (words by: @RamseySaidWHAT)
In: &Drew, CivXSav Forever, Day Sut By: Jonathan C. RamseyJoe College speaks truth about the journey. This was the only recurring theme in this project considering it rang off before every song crescendos in. Perhaps it's not as deep and figurative as I'm making it out to be but I felt it. You could also take it literally considering they just switched coasts on us and he's out in LA these days. It's been awhile since I reviewed a College project but I wasn't expecting another one this year given the success of CivXSav Forever.
This won't take long as listening these seven tracks only takes 24 minutes of your time. These days that's been the trend of these EPs or Albums (whatever you want to call it). When I asked him he chalked it up to coincidence.
"It ain't an EP, it ain't a mixtape, it ain't an album. It's just Pay the Man lol"
Joe College
Joe College
I sat in a studio session with College and Party about two months ago. There was a beat with a particular 90's R&B sample that I have to keep under wraps that they were working on. The &Drew produced beat didn't make the project; however I attended a recent show at the Saint in Asbury Park, Drew informed me that it might make the cut on the album we can expect next year, a homecoming of sorts. Let's rap about Pay the Man.
The lead single, Right Back, got a visual treatment the day it dropped. When Right Back came out I should have expected a project but I wasn't sure considering CivXSav Forever dropped last winter. It sounds a little different opening up this listening session, but it still holds weight. Ya N***a Could Never which features Luv Child follows up. I thought this verse sounded familiar. Per College that was the verse he originally had planned for that aforementioned 90's sample produced by Drew. Good thing he went with this one because it fits nicely to the smoothness of the beat. He flexes his signature braggadocio flow while Luv Child cosigns with a less than arrogant more than humble outro of his own. Drew and Party collab on a production tip for this one.
For Mom (Sunset) is next up and features some background vocals and production from Party. Joe College is a clever fellow. The title of this track is lowkey a double entendre. It's a message for his mom that her son is set (Sun-Set, get it?). Maybe I'm thinking too far into it but the song is dope. It's a beautiful conversation between mother and son. It's interesting to look at parent child relationships from retrospect as we age and this is penned wonderfully.
Remember Day Sut? She got the feature on the next track Shame on Us. Wesley and Spike Lee strike again (Joe College and Party Michael). The addition of Long Branch native, Day Sut helps make this some real life mood music. Pay this in the whip with your shorty windows down on Ocean Ave on a warm day. Speaking of music for the whip, In My Jeep is the only track solely produced by Qdottdavis. After listening to this I must say Q is one of the most slept on producers in Jersey. The problem with a lot of artists is they don't know who they are and follow whatever trendy sound is the new thing. Q has their identity figured out. The CivXSav Music clan is one of the most complete in that aspect.
All put two tracks had features on them but none of them were from another rapper. All of them were R&B singers. The blend of R&B and Hip Hop on a whole project make for a great mesh. We are seeing College mature sonically and in wordplay. Without Me is so mature. Sure he brags but what rapper doesn't. The track is about a breakup that didn't end in toxicity but because the timing was off. Who in their mid-20s has that figured out (and also raps)? Just saying. Although this wasn't meant to be listened in any particular order the sequencing was still pretty good. It almost sounds like a beginning middle and end as far as as story goes. College and Qwik took off for the City of Angels so this is gonna have to hold us til they make it back home. Godspeed. You can grab Pay the Man anywhere you stream your music but I've made it easy and embedded it below. Press play.

In: CivXSav Forever, Joe College, Qdottdavis By: Jonathan C. Ramsey
Dom P and Vueve Cliquot at the dinner table. It's the CivXSav way.
Joe College's Civ X Sav Forever is probably the biggest releases in Jersey this year. He told me it would be in our A-Side B-Side interview. Since it dropped so early in the year. How do you keep the foot on the pedal? Easy. Drop a video. Heart Drop is the first song from the project to get a visual treatment. As expected CivXSav's in house producer, qdotdavis lays down the tunes for College to float on. What y'all may not know about me is I'm a trained wine sommelier. To keep it funky, a fish fry and champagne is a damn good wine pairing I'm just saying. I gotta figure out how to get an invite to the next shoot if they keep cooking like this. Check out the video below.

4 Piece? Try four point play.
A couple days ago he dropped a four track EP in preparation for the forthcoming album, CivXSav Forever. College hasn't really been one for projects in the past as this is the first since Rugged but Smooth a few years back. I'm not going to go in depth about this EP you can listen below for yourself. College keeps it in house per usual with production from &Drew and Qdotdavis respectively. Party lends a hand in a couple of joints as well. I think we can expect the same for the full length. As for a full review, you'll have to wait for the album just like me. Something tells me their formula is complete and after this it'll cost a pretty penny to catch College. 4 Piece after the break.

I really gotta learn how to work corporate and stay up past 2AM. According to PartyMichael that's when the magic happens as he's invited me to the studio more than a few times. After our live review a couple months back he stayed in the lab with me and played me a few new beats he was working on. Then he revealed Fan wasn't the only thing he had cooked up with Joe College.Album sooner than soon too— Joe college (@Lowcollege) November 18, 2017

Listen: My People - Joe College (@lowcollege); A Niles P. Joint
In: Joe College, Listen, My People By: Unknown
With the way viral marketing is set up in this day and age, rappers have taken to releasing songs as often as possible. Joe College however, is an old soul and does things at his own pace, trends be damned. He's back on the scene with My People. On a beat by a rapidly improving QdottDavis, College subtly forges a pro-Black anthem by mixing around the way adoration with social commentary. Being that it’s Joe College, his flow is still impeccably cool and has yet to be duplicated by anyone in the Garden State. Despite the hiatus he’s back just in time to hold us down for the summer. You can never quite tell what College has up his sleeve next, but this writer hopes that My People snowballs into a new full-length project. Check it out for yourself below.

Joe College is back at it. This time seems to be a homecoming rap anthem for New Jersey.
QdottDavis samples the old DJ Jayhood club jam, Heartbroken. I even like the sound bite from a DJ Wallah pajama party and everyone who was club hopping in '09 knows exactly what that was like. I must admit when I saw the album art I thought it was a real flyer for a party and I'm sure a few of you were hitting up College Ave Student Center thinking the same thing. College names a few landmarks we're all used to with Six Flags and those late night Crown Chicken stops. Although I would have loved to hear this as a summer jam, this one's definitely for New Jersey. Spread this to your favorite DJ's and listen to 4 New Jersey below.

About a week back we got a new Joe College loosie. It's been a few months since our sit down when we chopped it up off record. He talked about the next route he'd be taking. It was a different sound for him but he said it'd be inclusive to his own camp. That remains true for his new Qdotdavis produced song Aint No Thing. And yes, "you put your staff on." Find out for yourself below after the break. Not sure what to expect if this is just a freebie or we'll see it on the next College project.
