Watch: Creep 2018 - @_therealkarma feat. @SoULFULLnjn

There isn't much that needs to be said about this that I haven't already said in my review of THREE.

Kärma dazzles in the director's seat of her latest visual for Creep 2018. Straight up, the song is nasty so it only makes sense this Homemade film would be too. She taps into two couples to serve as the vixens in this sultry music video. Maybe they couldn't get to the room or couldn't wait to get to the spot. I think we all know what goes down in the backseat of the whip. SoULFULL lends a dope verse to close the track out. Press play below. I need you to feel this.

Listen: Maneuver - @Malc_____ feat. @_TheRealKarma @SoULFULLnjn & @cinkoshow

Right before the Thanksgiving holiday, Malc blessed us with a new EP, titled Thinking Out Loud.

One of the highlights of the project is track two, Maneuver. The 94 Til spitter dons his signature motivational style over this Nebula Beats & Ill Will Beats collaboration. After a verse and pre-chorus he passes the mic to Kärma, SoULFULL, and newest Homemade artist Cinko. The four of them sing the hook together as they all contribute with melodic verses afterward. Listen to Manuever after the break.

Watch: Break Off - @therealkarma_

If you haven't listened to our review of Kärma's new EP, THREE, go back and listen to it on A Side B Side Podcast.

There I talked about how Break Off was a perfect blend of Hip Hop, R&B, and even dabbled in some baroque era musical elements in modern form. With that said, the JC songstress dons a kimono and not much else in this steamy visual for her new single. Bars, Riffs, and a lot to say. Press play below.

Album Review: Soon Enough - @____Malc (words by @RamseySaidWHAT)

2020 has been an insane year for all of us. Let's be frank, we're dodging utter death at the hands of an incurable illness that has us at a global standstill. Malc is coming off a huge 2019 and an even bigger first quarter of 2020. It's amazing how the 94 Til camp is keeping the momentum up with this project, Soon Enough. After the 94 Til Showcase and Feels Like R&B Too, I had it in my mind that there was no way Malc wouldn't touch a WTM stage this year. The Bayonne emcee's star power is undeniable and everyone is noticing. To this point, I've only taken deep dives into his shorter extended plays. How will he fare on a full-on album? Let's get to it.

The project begins with an unlikely voice. Not the voice of Malc or anyone featured but an even more familiar voice in Dave East who provides a drop for the Hudson county upstart. Track two, So Much, of serves as the real introduction to Soon Enough. The production was magnificent. A few chord progressions start of the track with the addition of bars from Malc then a delayed kick-snare percussion. As every instrument comes into play it widens the pallet that is the space between your ears.

"F*ck a hook just gonna let this sh*t loop."

I love rap songs where it's no hook. It gives artists space to vent or speak to us. Time and time again I rave about Malc's taste in music when it comes to his production and sample choices. We'll dive into that more later. Kärma background vocals finish the sonic layering. She's the last voice we heard on the last track and is the first voice we hear on track three, Mercedes Ambitions. Since I got the early scoop I listened to this album before the tracklist was announced. Verse two really surprised me. I had to double-take because I thought in addition to the drop, he got a verse from Dave East. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was with Malc's frequent collaborator in Twice. Twice has a real husky voice perfect for rap. After catching him at the 94 Til showcase pre quarantine I left the venue impressed with his performance and intrigued to see what he has next.

Y.O.S. is definitely Malc's best track to date. I think public perception would agree. Even after its appearance on his last EP, No Hesitation II, it's only right it serves as a lead single to Soon Enough. This might be a perfect record. I like to follow the family trees of music and this one is quite the journey. Y.O.S. flips Dear Summer by Memphis Bleek and HOV which samples, Morning Sunrise by Weldon Irvine. Production aside, Malc really feeds this song with BARS! "Ambition, I'm just tryna live and do more than survive."

A Song For You provides more dope samples. This beat flips Dej Loaf's claim to fame, Try Me. Malc really shows off his storytelling abilities with a tale of a friend who gets caught up with a gun charge post-graduation. I'll let you listen for yourself without spoiling the track. The next track, In the Moment, is one of those records you wish was a whole song. I have a playlist of interludes and intros we wish were whole songs. This one is easily going to join The Girl with the Tattoo by Miguel and Feelin Me, Feelin U by Alicia Keys. After another Dave East cosign, Malc laces this Snoh flip.

I want to fast forward to Let Up. This record is an interpolation of Tupac's keep your head up. This version of Pac would be an obvious influence. He said he'd spark the brain that'd change the world after all right? Darryl J really puts his thing down trading harmonies with Kärma throughout. Their vocal chemistry is superb. If you're a sports fan you'll catch some subtle mentions in Malc's music from time to time. There was a bar in track nine, Views, I enjoyed. He compares his team to 92's UNLV basketball squad. Larry Johnson, Stacey Agumon, Greg Anthony? It took Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, and Bobby Hurley's Duke squad to take them down. If you don't recognize the names do your homework after listening to this project.

We finally get to the end with More to It. I always pay close attention to the outros of rap albums. It's the last opportunity to get your point across. The grind and chasing success is an ongoing theme in a lot of Malc's music. You can say the same with this project. The last three tracks are a testament to that. Some gems in bars about how his 9 to 5 feeds his passion. LLC twitter would appreciate that. All jokes aside, as the record fades out he talks about something he learned from his late father.

This album sounds like Malc talking to a younger version of himself. It's inspiring in a way I think 14-year-old Jonathan hoopin' at the Boys and Girls Club would be driven by. If Malc wasn't as good as an entertainer as he is, one would complain he's preachy. To be in the healthy medium of both without compromising yourself on a production end is amazing. In my opinion, that's the true measure of an artist. It's one thing to be versatile, it's another to be out of character. Malc is the former.

I wouldn't change a thing about this album. Malc's greatest strength is the same as his sole weakness, his superior Breath Control. He's such a good linguist that he staccatos his syllables so you can really hear what he's saying. It's the sign of a great speaker. Unlike rappers, vocalists would sometimes scoop or slur two words together for sake of music. Nothing to complain about because that's what you bring singing features like Kärma and Darryl J for. Malc is an artist whose music is good enough I'd really enjoy a performance of B Side records with a live band. The highs are really high and there aren't any lows. I think this is his best culmination of music to date. You make the decision by listening below. I need you to feel this.

Album Review: For Motivational Use Only - @Malc___

P2 hasn't been out no longer than eight months and we have new listening material. For Motivational Use Only is his latest offering. Not going to waste your time so let's get right to it. It's only a seven track, 23 minute listen. Things begin with Daily Repetitions. As I said before it's a dope way to kick off a tape. I also enjoy he calls in Kärma and SoULFULL for the assist. Nothing but net here. If you were looking for a 16 from SoULFULL you'll have to go back and listen to No Hesitation because he really just comes through on the pre-chorus as a singer.

"F*ck being good cuz that ain't good enough."

Make it Out shares the same sample as Wale's The Success, Psalm 121. Thus Far in his discography Malc really shows his eclectic taste as a music listener and what he raps over. I'm always impressed with his production. Malc raps like a man 30 years older than he is. It's clear he's seen some things in his life as a twenty-something. The themes of his music get pretty dark in the midst of his inspirational quotes.

"death don't usually phase me since my pops died
can't tell you last time i cried
but hearing bout my nigga death
that shit brought tears to my eyes"

I think that bar hits different when you've lost someone. Mirrors with Kärma is pretty dope. The flip of So Into You gives it the nostalgia 90's feel we all enjoy. The song takes us the rollercoaster that is a relationship. He's not too proud to explain where he messed up and apologize. Karma leaves the syrup harmonies at the end. I'm digging this here. Alone isn't as melancholy as I expected it to be musically. The hook takes on an interpolation of the classic Geto Boys, Mind Playin Tricks On Me. Instead of staring at candles contemplating murder, he's listening to samples looping.

Hold On/Gina's Interlude comes next. I'm usually a fan of when producers sample the subtle parts of classic songs. Here it's not so subtle and they put the melody in the front with a similar tempo and percussion to Angie Stone's Holding Back the Years. If you don't recognize it Love & Basketball is on Netflix now. The B-Side of the track is a voicemail from Mom Dukes. It's a nice touch. It really keeps the continuity of the track sequence and feel of the project. The next track is a sequel to Odds from his last project. In fact the track starts with the hook coming through a low pass filter before part II fades in. I must have listened to this 30 times on my way home from work one day. It's a reminder to keep working after that 9-5 grind. If you don't consider that a cosign listen to his manager Russ in the beginning of the last track, the title track. It really reels this whole thing in and doesn't leave you in a bad mood. Let me explain. For Motivational Use Only feels like a weather week in New Jersey. I swear this is the only place you could get 4 seasons in 7 days. For Motivational Use Only gives us rain, snow, hurricanes, and a 82 degree day on Christmas. I need you to feel this. Press play below.

Listen: Daily Repetitions - @malc___ (feat. @soulfullnjn & @karma)

Malc for WeAreJersey Magazine
Malc is closing out the decade with more fire.

He recently dropped his newest project, For Motivational Use Only. The one thing I've noticed since first listening to his music was his intro tracks always set the tone. This time he features SoULFULL & Kärma on his newest Daily Repetitions. We didn't get a full 16 from either of their features but their background and the hook was a nice touch. Malc provides the bars as expected. His camp came by the crib and we listened to it on it's drop day. I'll say more when the review drops but check it out for yourself after the break.

I'm not talking about No Guidance. I've been saying it and playing it. Attitude by Macc McCray is a bop. You can see what else I had to say in my June write up as well as hear it in Episode 20 of A-Side B-Side Podcast. Macc's Kärma ain't right and things take a funny twist at the end. Watch: Speak Up (Official Video) - @_TheRealKarma

After watching the new video for Speak Up, it's safe to say I want ZERO problems with Kärma. It ain't Easy and it sure ain't cupcakes and bubblegum.

HoMEMADE films shot a thriller of a visual treatment off Kärma's latest project, About Last Night. I've always enjoyed the visuals the two of them put together. The plot, the music, and direction are always on point. I won't be long winded on this because you're going to press play after the break. Just know that there's a wild ending. I need you to feel this.

About Last Night EP Review - @_TheRealKarma (words by @RamseySaidWHAT)

I have a ritual in the days leading one of my favorite artist's release. I listen to their discography from start to finish before pressing play on the new project for the first time. I think that's the best way to see the journey in its entirety. Terry Pratchett, an old fantasy novelist once said: "If you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you're going." Let's do Kärma some justice by paying attention to the whole story.

Today's tale takes us on a journey from Bandcamp, to Soundcloud, and now to modern streaming services with Life After Love, Sunny Side Up, and now About Last Night. I think that's a testament to how seasoned Kärma is. After listening it'd be a disrespect to go into this project expecting to hear something specifically. She's too complex to be characterized without listening for sonics, prose, and cadence. You just have to hear for yourself. Let's dive in.

The EP is a little over 15 minutes so it's important you don't miss anything. It begins with Easy which got blessed with a visual treatment courtesy, HoMEMADE Films. Macc McCray even makes a cameo playing the love interest at the record store. It's cute, and reassuring words coming from a lover. The music is allegro and her voice is bright. It makes for a great opener to the project.

We played Depend on Me in the last episode of A-Side B-Side Podcast. This is probably the most traditional sounding R&B she's dropped in the last two projects. I'll explain that later. If you go back and listen to our interview with the Jersey City songstress, she explains her creative process as not just a singer but engineer as well. When you record yourself it comes with it's good and bad. She knows her own voice probably better than most acts which makes the mixing process a little more difficult. I didn't even know Kärma could even reach into tenor so low. I'm impressed by the range of her lower register. She shines at the end of this track with the three part harmony. She describes them as syrup harmonies. It's very intricate and we hear the same in the next song, Promise. Where the first two tracks are optimistic songwriting this acoustic ballad is much more somber.

The project closes out with Speak Up. Sonically, I feel like it could have been a leftover song from her last EP, Sunny Side Up. It just has that feel where it's a little unorthodox and falls in line with a subgenre of R&B instead of the structured sound our ears are accustomed to. This isn't a bad thing. It just proves more and more that Kärma knows herself and her sound. Make Me Say didn't make the cut which doesn't surprise me. She isn't a fan of singles so to see it make the project would be unlike her. Besides it didn't fit the theme. About Last Night is further proof that she is making the crossover from novice to veteran in more ways than one. If I could change anything about this EP I'd make it longer because I love it. She sure knows how to make us miss her. In the meantime let's run it up while it's still fresh. Check out About Last Night after the break. The soundcloud version has the bonus tracks too. I need you to feel this.

Watch: Summer Love - @Bekhari feat. @_TheRealKarma (shot by: @goodbreedfilms)

Next week is the technical end of the Summer so we still got time for more love right?

New on the WTM radar is Bekhari. She's a songstress from Newark and and from what I can tell, she's a stylist as well. Maybe that's why her aesthetic is so fire. This new video shot by Good Breed Films is to her new single, Summer Love. The song is upbeat with a horn section and percussion sounding straight from the 90s. She has a beautiful voice and speaking of nice voices, the track features Kärma. From the beach to a studio canvas the visuals are stunning and so is the Black Girl Magic. I can keep talking about it or you can see for yourself. Check out Summer Love below.

Watch: Likkle More - @_TheRealKarma (shot by: @HomemadeFilms)

Likkle More is the newest visual treatment from Kärma latest EP, Sunny Side Up.

As expected Homemade Films is behind the lens. The video is fun and casts the Jersey City songstress in portrait mode sporting a fresh cut. Likkle More is short and almost serves as an interlude on the project as we remember it. It sounds like the culmination of what experiennce has taught her in relationships since Life After Love. For more insight you should listen to Episode 3 of A-Side B-Side Podcast when we interviewed with her. I like that even though the project was short we see it rekindled in visual form. Check out the video for Likke More below.

Sidebar; Kärma just dropped her new website - lovekärmamusic.com you may or may not see some words written by me there.

Listen: Thanks for Nothing - @MaccMcCray

Maybe about a month back I finally woke up and realized Macc McCray is responsible for a lot of songs I like, especially around these parts. Some of my favorites are Make Me Say by Kärma and the work he did on Reason by Hardaway.

A few weeks ago Macc released a project of his own, Thanks For Nothing. The project was a thousand flame emojis. Seriously, braggadocio flows meet a plethora of beats. Thanks is an excellent grand sounding way to kick things off. Some of my favorites include a couple of features from Kärma with You Already Know and Say Amen which features a dope live electric guitar solo towards the end. That production is especially great because it basically loops the Jersey City songstress's own vocals in a super original and unique way. No samples, all talent and plug in. The skits are well placed and include stuff like viral video clips, interviews, and more. I also enjoyed Don't Call My Phone with Party Michael. Respect is fire and honest to God so is the Jersey Club remix. To sum up the project I think Respect could tell you what to expect here. Trust me, in due time the respect will come Macc. Keep up at this rate and they won't have a choice but to respect it.

Macc McCray is too talented as a spitter and producer alike. There's no reason you guys haven't listened to this yet. It's on every platform you can get music and it's embedded below. If you need another reason to listen maybe we can get him on A-Side B-Side before Season One is over. Until then, Thanks For Nothing below. I need you to feel this.

A-Side B-Side Episode 002: R&B Album of the Year 2017

It's only right if we did the R&B acts too right?

Enough people asked and if we're being honest R&B in 2017 was superb. So many new sub-genres emerged and we were impressed with how many new artists debuted last year. Listen to KatCandidly and Ramsey talk album of the year on episode two of A-Side B-Side Podcast. Did some of your favorites make the list? Did we miss out on anyone dope? We break it down thoroughly: Lyrics, Vocals, concept, production, and impact are the criteria. Leave a comment below. The music in this episode is Raindrops by Kärma from her Sunny Side Up EP Out Now! I need you to feel this.

Watch: Dysfunction - @_TheRealKarma (co-starring @ALLCAPSFRED)

Three years, that was the last time Kärma put a concept together.

This time she returns with a 4 track EP, Sunny Side Up. Dysfunction, produced by Chuck the Archduke & Jonelson Rene, even got blessed with a visual treatment. In the thumbnails and promos before the project you see the JC songstress with a bruised up face. Beforehand we knew this had to be crazy, and it was. SoULFULL commandeers the camera himself as this is a HoMEMADE film in addition to the photography for the artwork.

The video is co-starred by @ALLCAPSFRED. In what serves as the heaviest song the album, Dysfunction in video form does not lack in depth either. The story in visual is much different than what you'd expect from the audio. "You don't have to wonder about our love" turns to the worst, a domestic violence dispute. Things take a chilling turn at the climax of this video. I'll let you watch for yourself below. Cop Kärma's Sunny Side Up on iTunes today!

Sub-R&B: The Fall Edition by @RamseySaidWHAT

It's my birthday be nice to me. I've decided to give a gift from me out.

If you haven't been under a rock I curated a playlist series entitled Sub-R&B. It encompasses and covers the sub genres and crossover music that I love to talk about (and shamelessly sing in the shower). The inaugural playlist dropped this summer and it's only right I released a Fall Edition. What better day than today?
The leaves are changing colors. The sun goes down earlier. The soundtrack to your life should change too. This is the Fall 2017 Edition of your favorite playlist: Sub-R&B. We're still giving you the same crossover vibes with tracks from some new artists, some old favorites, and some people you may have never heard of.

Listen to this and play mental chess with that special someone. Don't risk saying anything stupid. Just keep eye contact and let the lyrics speak for you. See you again when the weather drops below freezing. When cuffing season is in full effect, you'll need new tunes. Until then...Sub R&B: The Fall 2017 Edition right here on What's The Movement. You can click the links for the playlists below or you can stream the playlist after the break.
