About a month back Ty Jackson dropped 36, his newest project since Alter Ego released about a year ago.
The Franklin crooner is really in his bag when it comes to the slow jams. Looking back to Coffee in the Morning, Slow Jam from Era Nu, and now CAN WE it's clear what kind of vocal powerhouse Ty is. After a couple listens, it's clear Ty has entered a great pocket and space making some of the best music of his career thusfar.

During the event Ty Jackson blessed the stage with a new song Coffee in the Morning. I know I mentioned this track before in my write up on Motionand in our Nine Acts to Watch This Year. Before he came to the stage I mentioned to watch out if you brought your girl to the show. Tyler is a vocal powerhouse. Live and in studio he dominates the tracks he laces. His growth is insane. If my only complaint on EraNu was how it was mixed, he's graduated from that. When your voice is so strong it's a task to blend the melody, harmony, and background vocals with the rest of the music. Good problems to have. In the studio version of Coffee in the Morning he's fixed that and then some. The song is certified for Get the Drawers playlists everywhere. We're a little more than a month into the year. I know how you guys get with lists. If you feel you or an artist you know should have made the list, prove me wrong this year. Or just @ me on twitter I can take the heat. Some of the acts on this list are really well kept secrets. The others, you already know about. Either way these guys and gals are due for a huge 2018.
Ty Jackson - The New Jeru Native has been quiet as of late. In fact Ty hasn't dropped a project since 2016 with his collab with SoULFULL on Boulevard Blues. I know first hand he's been working. When I covered Motion a month back I mentioned another unreleased track that should stir some pots. Coffee in the Morning is the name and I'm sure it'll be coupled with some more heat. Just wait for it.
Joe College - You're not living under a rock right? CivXSav Forever dropped and the reception has been bananas. The whole crew is clicking on all cylinders right now! In fact he sold out House of Independents in Asbury last week. You read correctly, SOLD OUT! No easy task to fill up a 500+ venue for an independent Jersey act of any genre. We got to talk to Rodney from Garden State Hip Hop in tomorrow's podcast episode about the event. I even chopped it up with College the day of the album release. Check that out here.
David Michael Jonze - Dave Made Time. No really, that's even the name of his forthcoming project. Let's just say a birdie gives me the inside scoop. Dude is probably one of the most hardworking cats out here and hasn't ever rapped over a song he didn't personally produce. Take a second to grasp that. I just caught his performance at The Showcase Tour and he has a new single, Shea Butter on the way. You'll have to wait til later on this season of the podcast for that rest. Just know, the wait will definitely be worth it.
Shaqeyah- Unfortunately I've only gotten to cover the South Jersey songstress just once. What I do know about her is she's a hell of a talent. Solar System produced by Kenif Muse dropped in November. Enough of a gap that you could probably expect more material soon. If you're a fan of these new eerie subgenres of R&B I think you'll like her. I intend of covering her stuff more and maybe even getting her down to the lab soon. She just dropped a new track, Classic Love last week. Check it out below.
Macc McCray - Thanks for Nothing is out! I'm really intrigued by Macc's music. There's some buzz surrounding the West Orange artist. He's probably produced some stuff for artists you like too. Dude has a plethora of vibes and sounds he can catch you with from hip hop to R&B. Between this album and whatever else he cooks up, Macc McCray will have a breakout year.
MostDope - Simply put, I think he's next up out of the 732. Thus far in his discography, MostDope hasn't missed. P.O.M.E., Feb 14th, and Pressure have all be easy on the ears. I'd be silly not to include him on this list. He's one or two moves away from going next level, and the same goes for the rest of the A1 crew. Quote me if you like.
Khalil Jibran - Remember what I said a few months back: "Khalil Jibran is by far in my opinion the
best live performing emcee in Jersey right now." Time went on and I still stand by it. His energy is crazy. If you go to a show and see him on the bill there is no way you fools can keep your arms folded. Some talent just can't be denied. F*ck 12 has won awards, and he's started his own record label. Keep a lookout on A-Side B-Side for our interview with the Newark upstart.
Party Michael - Badside off NVR WRY is one of the best kept secrets of 2017. I even put it in the Sub-R&B playlist. I had the luxury of interviewing him on Non Fiction Radio and doing a live review on FB and Twitter live with him at The Lab at WTM. Let me say this. Party is brilliant. As a producer he is above average. As a vocalist I'll let you make your own opinion especially considering he knows mine. Oh did I mention he did features on Macc McCray & Joe College's projects. He also opened up the Joe College and Friends Sold Out show. How do you get so much done without dropping any music of his own this year? I feel it coming, 2018 is going to be special for Party, just watch.
Samad Savage - Things have been fairly quiet for the Montclair emcee recently. Enough to make me ask, Where's Samad Savage? Quiet as it's kept I imagine he's in the studio working or already done with a project. Last time I caught him was opening last summer at Starland for PNB Rock and being interviewed on the show right after Pass the Aux this summer at Nonfiction Radio. His soundcloud boasts a couple remixes and covers as well as OMG a few months back. Must mean a project is on the way. It is only February right?
Let me just say this real quick. Ty is sitting on some heat.
I've gone to a few events in the past month or so and saw him perform a new track twice. I won't give the details but the second he gets into it and does this neck roll, it's over for you and your chick if she's with you. Let's move on to today's listen. Motion with DrewCashhh dropped a month back but it's such a vibe. Time and time again I say Ty's voice is super powerful. Listen to this one in some speakers rather than headphones. I was initially worried he wasn't going to do music for awhile until this release. I'm so glad my reports were wrong. Definition is the title as Ty Jack swoons over a smooth track for the lovers. It's safe to say we can add this to my ever expanding Get the Drawers playlist as he tries to find words to define her body. Dude's voice is unfuckwittable and packs a serious punch on these slow R&B jawns but you already knew that. Listen to Definition after the break.

Countless loosies, a few features on each other's projects (HOMEMADE & EraNu respectively), and a killer collab project, Boulevard Blues this year. Lifestyles provides us the first visual off that project. Soulfull rap verse and a Ty Jack hook is a perfect formula but it's that second verse where Tyler spits a 16 instead of a crooning ballad instead. I'm more than impressed he had this much upside. It's finally the second quarter of 2016. The weather is warming up, the sun is out just a little bit longer every day which usually means new music from heavy hitters and underground artists alike. I always try to give the people what they want and you guys seem to like that in list form. Below is a group of acts (in no particular order) that we here at WTM think you should keep an eye (or ear) out for the rest of the year.
MoRuf - Two years, that was the last time we got a project out of the Irvington emcee. Shades of Moo was the last we've heard aside from that one week we were blessed with new material in Try and a video for Neighborhood. I always liked this guy since my man Jeff put me on. MoRuf is like the 90's raised music love child of D'Angelo and Jill Scott AND he can really spit. Moo was featured on Mohdalsoul's Pisces Loops EP, they dropped a video for a song titled Viewtiful Fish. Check that out below.
Ty Jackson - I heard him for the first time at Tha Grey Matter's relaunch event that I love to rave about. Ever since, I couldn't write about this vocalist enough. Frankly speaking, the Franklin crooner packs a huge punch. We just heard him on his col laboratory effort Boulevard Blues with fellow New Jeru Native, SOULFULL (whom we'll hear more about later). I'm also excited to hear what he has cooking up as a solo artist. Not many R&B singers out here in a world where everyone wants to rap. The follow up to EraNuis something I'm excited for flat out. Siimba Liives Long - I just caught this emcee shutting down Pianos in the lower east side a few weeks back. His set was electric and after the show we all followed him around like a cult waiting to see him eat fire. Not much is known about Siimba which gives him this mysterious factor that leaves fans begging for more. My sources tell me his debut album is finished and a release is imminent. From what I can tell this is something brewing for a long time and we all should heed and be prepared for. Thusfar he's given us three tracks in Lost Souls, WIA, and Cocaine Bimbie which you can watch below.
Khalil Jibran - Khalil Jibran is one of the best emcees from around the way, don't argue with me. Khali is the full package: An Instrumentalist, a firery emcee, and he brings such energy to every performance. Newark's archangel has yet to give us a solo project since RainOnASUNday a few years back. The Libre Brand artist worked with a lot of underground talent from TrapDan, Yoqueri from 185, and more. We've gotten a few videos and loosies but I think we're all ready for the concept project we know he's capable of. I know he has a lot of great stories and trials in his life that has probably hit the booth. Khalil is brings intensity like Meek Mill, knowledge like Lupe Fiasco, and incorporates different genres of music like K. Dot. A month back he dropped Love is King produced by DJ Fade the Future, listen to that after the break.
Rav P - Passport Rav has seen a lot of success since I first heard him. There's a lot of growth going on for this young man. Making music with the likes of Smoke Dza and Black Thought is no small rodeo. The sky is the limit for him as an emcee AND a producer. It's been almost a year since Slave Name Todd released but he's been building more and more buzz as time goes on. You can actually check him as one of the headliners of a show at SOB's on the 27th. I already covered Idle Hands but you can stream that one again right here.
SOULFULL - I think SOULFULL is top five emcees in the state of Jersey, underground or otherwise. If you had to ask him he doesn't even say he's the best in the Natives. He reserves that right to the GodBodyRapper Khamal (whom I'd love to hear more of soon). That says a lot about how humble of a guy SOULFULL is. You really have to watch out for him in what is gearing up to be a breakout year for this guy. When I sat down with him he talked to me about the projects he had coming out. The collab with Ty Jack was slated to go in a few weeks but we talked about his collab project with Karma, I-95 & Wifi as well as two more solo projects in the works. I won't spill too much but, you can catch the rest in my interview coming soon. What I can tell you is if we're lucky we'll get a sequel to MTAG as well as a big project in the fall that hits close to home. A few days ago he remixed Grindwith One Take. Bump that after the break.
see.francis - seefrancis is an act that I'm just now getting to know about. If we're being frank I only heard of him this year. Cosigns from my man Yasin and his Podcast About Nothing interview is where I got to know him more. We've covered a couple of his songs recently in All I Wanted and Everything. I'm just interested to see what is next for this guy. He's very talented and I just learned he produces as well as records as an artist. The follow up to Fiat Lux EP is going to be one to remember. Audrey Rose - The Long Branch Native took the mainstream world by storm last year. I was especially impressed with her project, Chapter One: Guns and Roses. I said it before I say it again, there aren't enough singers from around the way and it's nice to see the talent flourishing in the spotlight. She had a crazy rookie and sophomore year and I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to the follow up. She recently has been working with another singing talent from North Jersey, Justin Love. I had the pleasure of meeting him once via a mutual friend at his home studio in Bergen. To see them both collab was dope and they performed at Webster together last month. Kärma - She's probably the most underrated act on this list. Super talented from an outright musical standpoint. She flat out knows how to create a song and make it worth the listen. We've gotten a few loosies recently with DeathWish and Solstice but I'm excited to hear a full length soon. I love the fact she isn't Hollywood and a pleasure to talk to in person (with or without a drink or hookah in hand). She's probably made music with your favorite around the way rapper or singer too. I already told you she's been cooking up and EP with frequent collaborator SOULFULL titled I-95 & Wifi. A couple weeks back I reviewed her project Life After Love. Upon listening I was begging for more. It was impressive considering it was a few years old. I'm pressed to find out how much she's grown. Listen to Watchu Need featuring Kraze below.
Joe College - Rounding out our list is Joe College. For a while I'm sure I wasn't the only one wondering "Where the hell is Joe College?" It wasn't until recently when he reemerged on social media recreating his instagram. Usually when artists disappear without a trace they are working on something big and I haven't ruled that out. We haven't got a project from him since Rugged but Smooth. In his interview with us he spilled that he's finally ready for an LP, something tells me that he's close to being finished (probably should have asked him when I ran into him at the gym). He recently performed at Webster with Desiigner (the guy on Panda who sounds like Future but isn't Future) and he's been cooking up a new sound while balancing his work with CivXSav Apparel. Jersey is beginning to take a precedent and make a stamp on the tri-state and in the national scene. Rounding this out to ten acts was difficult but these are the cats who's proven they are a force to be reckoned with. That is not to take away from other acts making noise like the A1 crew, Sticks and Stones, the Remy Boys, or others I may have just missed out on (it happens I'm just a man). Otherwise I'm impressed by these guys and more which proves a testament that the New Jersey Culture scene is booming with talent and love.
Song on Repeat: On The Way - Big Sean & Jhene Aiko
Out of nowhere Big Sean & Jhene Aiko eff'd up the game and dropped Twenty88. I saw my TL talking about the surprise release but everyone was vague. When I got the chance, I actually saw that it was a collaborative EP between the heavy hitters. At this point I had to stream it immediately. On the Way is definitely gonna be a killer on the radio. Not 100 if I'm just gonna enjoy this as a fan or actually be critical of the project. Until I decide enjoy On the Way after the break.
Indie Track: Nites X Work - PartyXMichael
New on the WTM radar is PartyXMichael. A couple weeks back he dropped his new project, Gone So Far. Nites X Work like much of the project samples a lot from Drake's So Far Gone. Produced himself he looped Drake and Lloyd in A Night Off. combined with trap and synths providing a dope vibe. A little too much autotune for my liking but combined with the rap verse the track is tough. Check it out after the break.
Throwback Jawn: Feels Good - Tony Toni Tonè
I found myself behind my turntables this week. It's been awhile since I mixed anything seriously so I took my stab at New Jack Swing. MotownPhilly, Poison, FatherMC, all share the BPM with the track I keep revisiting today, Feels Good by Tony, Toni, Tonè. This is really the music I grew up on watching my mom and dad dance at the cookouts too. Take a trip to the good ole days with the kid below.
Project of the Week: Boulevard Blues - Ty Jackson & SOULFULL
Niles already reviewed the Franklin, New Jeru Natives duo's project but this is definitely a lot of what I've been listening to this week. After my sit down with SOULFULL he previewed the first track, truth, for me. Ty Jackson is a vocal powerhouse packing a lot of soul in his diaphragm. I'm already excited for the follow up to EraNu and the other projects SOULFULL announced to me. I'll spill more when I drop the interview soon. The New Jeru Natives are continuing to musically fortify their stronghold on the state’s rap scene. This time around they combine the talents of two of their best and brightest, singer Ty Jackson & emcee SOULFULL , for an EP. When I first heard of the collaboration, titled Boulevard Blues, I honestly had no idea on how it would play out. Throughout hip hop history, there have been a mountain of collabs between rap and R&B, but no one has successfully done it for a full project. Additionally, this would be my first real introduction to Ty Jackson as I hadn’t covered any of his music for WTM before now. So the five track project was as good of an opportunity as any to analyze both.
Despite being labeled as such, Blues Brothers (Intro) is a fully fleshed out song, and I’m glad they fleshed it out and didn't cut it short. Ty Jack successfully fuses singing and rapping. His voice has the melodic qualities to make this work. It’s a lightning and thunder combination as SOULFULL finishes the track with his more traditional and trademark gruff bars. It’s an early sign that shit’s gonna go well on the EP. Truth has an early 2000s Neo Soul vibe and I didn’t know how much I missed that subgenre until I heard this song. This joint will take you back to the days of big ass Rocawear belt buckles holding up oversized jeans with a garbage wash, haha. The two artist’s chemistry becomes more apparent with each song.
Lifestyles continues along the same line while still maintaining it’s originally. Using a smooth ass combo of guitar and other strings, they make a song that’s both easygoing & substantial lyrically. It’s also worth noting that while primarily a singer, Ty is also a serviceable rapper. We get more of a traditional R&B/Soul tone with Rock On. It’s the closest thing to a slow jam that the EP has and I’m glad that they buried the lede and defied expectations. The crown jewel of the whole joint is the closer, My Way. The Franklin, NJ duo talks about their pursuit of careers in music and how their dreams conflicted with those of their parents. It’s a moving theme set to melancholy music that anyone that’s went against the grain in face of their parents can relate to. At the end they encapsulate it when Ty Jackson says he “just want to do this shit my way.” It’s that balance between the pain of letting your parents down with the resolve of making it on your own terms that’s makes the song a tour de force.
To say that this project surpassed my expectations is an understatement. I was expecting a bunch of love songs and instead got some deep themes that brought back a nostalgia for an era I kind of forgot about. More so, I knew SOULFULL was dope but I was very impressed with Ty Jackson’s skill set. I would've been cool with him singing but he proved that he has the ability to hold his own as a rapper. All of these things bode well for both artists and the New Jeru Natives as a whole. They’re going to be hard to stop this year and beyond with all of the talent they have and how they're channelling it into great projects. Now my only gripe with the project is the fact that I’m a greedy ass music fan and wish it was longer, but they traded quantity for unbridled quality and it made all the difference in the world.
Last week, I almost missed out on the remix to Slow Jam by New Jeru Native Ty Jackson.
This was definitely my favorite track off his EraNu project a few months back. This time the remix showcases the talents of Karma. I've always been astonished by how well she does on features. She does more than enough to leave an impression without completely upstaging anyone. I don't know what it is about her on these bedroom bangers but I'll let her live. Throw this on your sexset fellas. I need yall to feel this. Slow Jam remix below.

Today's piece is on his video for LoveHate which features the talents of Ty Jackson & Chensé Cain. The Ron Downes Film production was surperb. The creative combination of he and Soulfull created a great narrative. This isn't the first time they worked together as he directed the SHINESongvideo too. Ty Jack plays therapist to an all too real couple struggle. Ty Jackson latest
project EraNu is filled with heart filled lyrics, and
silky vocals.
He has a soulful,
smooth voice reminiscent of the days when Neo-Soul ruled the airways. He sings
about some of the stages of love. From feeling that this person is the one,
that this love is real. To singing about moving on from a love that has run its
course.
The tape opens up with a self title. Soulfull narrates where most of the actually music is is just scats and humming vocals aside from a verse. Soulfull makes another appearance on track three Nice to Meet You. Gritty rap meets soul. Funny enough the former comes from the latter. Great song structure and catchy. My only issue is Ty Jack doesn't really have a verse and just sings the hook. It sounds like Soulfull featuring Ty Jack and not the opposite. Bri Janet does a nice job singing background. This is followed up by the lead single Slow Jam which I covered here. Bri Janet also makes another appearance on my
favorite track Breath Interlude. The way their voices
blended together into one lovely fixation was heaven sent. Just two powerful
singers that started to match each others notes while sitting in the studio one
day, and came out with gold. The message along with their voices is like a
cherry on top of a perfect sundae. "Just breath and let it go." The beat is sampled from J. Cole's Can I Holla At Ya? off the first volume of his Truly Yours series in between his rookie and sophomore albums. I Like is another fan favorite. It features A.Lee and takes a fun Chocolate Factory sound. You can play this one at the cookouts for your parents and peers to hit the love slide to.
As
much as I love the Neo-Soul old school vibe of the project, I wish he had
more fun with this project. It's like he got in the studio with a good producer and
ripped whatever track they played. Things don’t always have to have that old
school feel to be good. Music can be a great compromise between the new and the
old. I felt like he held back. I also think it was short, but nine tracks on a debut is perfect. Ty Jack makes each of these nine songs his. The monologues at the end of the tracks gives him a real identity as an artist and a man. He doesn't waste time trying to sound like anyone else. He is a pure tenor and still takes chances reaching into his upper register and does this flawlessly throughout. There are a few rookie mistakes but they happen. I cant wait to hear future projects and see all
his potential fulfilled. The New Jeru Natives are full of talent and Ty Jack is another gem within the camp. Listen to EraNu below after the break.

I loved this song. It gives me the 90's R&B soul. Not to mention the powerhouse that is Ty's voice. The song is a welcome change from what most call R&B these days. This is a love ballad that's simply about having sex. I could totally picture this playing in the background of a vintage love scene or in an up-and-coming movie. Sidebar, and dare I say that I detect a sample from the melody of Mary J. Blige's Take Me As I Am and Jay-Z's Dead Presidents II. All in all, I can't wait to hear more music from Ty Jack. Kärma - She's probably the most underrated act on this list. Super talented from an outright musical standpoint. She flat out knows how to create a song and make it worth the listen. We've gotten a few loosies recently with DeathWish and Solstice but I'm excited to hear a full length soon. I love the fact she isn't Hollywood and a pleasure to talk to in person (with or without a drink or hookah in hand). She's probably made music with your favorite around the way rapper or singer too. I already told you she's been cooking up and EP with frequent collaborator SOULFULL titled I-95 & Wifi. A couple weeks back I reviewed her project Life After Love. Upon listening I was begging for more. It was impressive considering it was a few years old. I'm pressed to find out how much she's grown. Listen to Watchu Need featuring Kraze below.
The New Jeru Natives are continuing to musically fortify their stronghold on the state’s rap scene. This time around they combine the talents of two of their best and brightest, singer Ty Jackson & emcee SOULFULL , for an EP. When I first heard of the collaboration, titled Boulevard Blues, I honestly had no idea on how it would play out. Throughout hip hop history, there have been a mountain of collabs between rap and R&B, but no one has successfully done it for a full project. Additionally, this would be my first real introduction to Ty Jackson as I hadn’t covered any of his music for WTM before now. So the five track project was as good of an opportunity as any to analyze both.
